The searing, visionary memoir of founding Black Panther Huey P. Newton, in a dazzling graphic package
Eloquently tracing the birth of a revolutionary, Huey P. Newton's famous and oft-quoted autobiography is as much a manifesto as a portrait of the inner circle of America's Black Panther Party, which is recognizing its 50th anniversary in October 2016. From Newton's impoverished childhood on the streets of Oakland to his adolescence and struggles with the system, from his role in the Black Panthers to his solitary confinement in the Alameda County Jail, Revolutionary Suicide is smart, unrepentant, and thought-provoking in its portrayal of inspired radicalism.

From the Back Cover
In October 1967, one year after the founding of the Black Panther Party, Huey Newton was involved in a shooting during which an Oakland police officer was killed. Newton spent three years in prison before being released and having his charges dismissed, and his jailing brought cries of "Free Huey" from supporters around the world. This engrossing and well-written autobiography recounts the forming of a revolutionary and shows how the degrading and psychologically destructive penal system forged Newton's already growing spirit. When Newton was a child, his father instilled in him a sense of dignity and pride; as an adolescent, he was torn between religious principles and life as a hustler; as a young man, he founded the radical Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale, and finally, in solitary confinement in the Alameda County Jail, he reached deep within himself to find the strength to face adversity; and even death without fear.
About the Author
Born the son of a Baptist minister in 1942 in Monroe, Louisiana, Huey P. Newton moved to Oakland, California, with his family at the age of three. Although functionally illiterate upon graduating from high school, he taught himself to read by studying Plato’s Republic. Newton enrolled at Oakland City College, where he campaigned successfully to have black history included in the curriculum. While at the college, he became familiar with the writings of Marx, Lenin, Frantz Fanon, and Chairman Mao. In 1966, with Bobby Seale, Newton co-founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, an organization in which Newton served as minister of defense. Though perhaps best known for their community street patrols, which openly displayed loaded firearms, the Black Panthers also sponsored breakfast programs for poor children and provided shoes and health care for the needy in the black community. Convicted in 1968 of manslaughter in the shooting death of Oakland police officer John Frey in 1968, Newton spent more than a year and a half in prison before his conviction was reversed. After a series of mistrials, the case against Newton was voluntarily dismissed. After reaching its high-water mark in 1970, when it claimed several thousand members, the Black Panther Party steadily declined, undermined in part by the efforts of the FBI. Accused of another murder in 1974, Newton jumped bail and spent the next three years in Cuba, after which he returned to the United States to stand trial and was acquitted of the charge. Newton earned a doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1980. He was shot to death by a gang member in 1989.

A Must For Every "Revolutionary" out there
By Rashad Powell
Revolutionary suicide is a book about a misunderstood, troubled but nonetheless less brillant man who is known as Huey Percy Newton. Huey Newton was man that was vilified, feared, hated, but also loved by many. It is almost impossible not to find yourself intertwined into the words this many spoke. Nothing is left out of this book. Every emotion, every fear, every hope, every vulnerability is outlaid before the reader. Huey P Newton was a man who lived without fear, he was a man that lived as if death was not a possibility but rather an inevitable reality. Even with the idea that eventually his life would come to an end he fought tirelessly and mercilessly to liberate the people. This book outlays the foundation of what we know now as The Black Panther Party For Self Defense. From it's inception as a group of a few individuals who sought to make a change to the saveage and unjust treatment by the police towards the people in the black community to a nationwide phenomena that grabbed America by its throat and refused to release it's grip. This book has a number of hidden jewels in it that lead to research which even more so helps the reader understand why The BPP was so imperative in America during that time and why even more so now than every before a group like the BPP is needed today. In this book you will learn of Huey Newton's less than humble beginnings, from a young man who goes as far as refusing to learn due to what he perceived as an outright attempt to make black children feel inferior in the school system to a teenager who has frequent brushes with the law and is involves in petty crime who graduates high school borderline illiterate, to a young man that discovers the wonders of reading which helped him learn the philosophies and ideologies which helped shaped the formation of the BPP. I myself consider Huey P Newton a philosophical genius as many of his ideals were quite enlightening and helped awaken my consciousness. In this book you get the unfiltered truth of what went on during the days of the panthers such as the numerous illegal activities committed by law enforcement, the shooting which almost led to the death of Huey, the the infighting which eventually tore the BPP apart, but apart from the negative there are several smile evoking moments in the book, such as the numerous times huey used the law to defend himself against the police, the rallies which the BPP organized, the response from the people when Huey is jailed and also when he is released from prison. i suggest this book for anyone who enjoys the subjects of black power, U.S. history, Law, and revolution. There is no putting this book down.

Insight

Huey Newton gives the accounts from his eyes and point of view from childhood to Black Panther. It's like he's sitting on your couch talking to you. He brings up the good and bad. I wondered why someone of his status would resort to drugs. After reading this book I did not wonder any longer.

What a fascinating book!
By Mary E. Goodwin Freeling
Truth is better than fiction! That's why they say "If you want to hide something from a Negro , put it in a book!" Back in the day they were so adamant about us no learning to read that now many of us won't pick up a book for anything. My advice is, if you Don't read any other books, read this one and the Bible. Both will awaken your consciousness and you soul.
