Robert Pendergrast, MD is a graduate of Furman University, the Medical College of Georgia and the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. A Breast Oncologist's View

As a breast medical oncologist, I have been caring for breast cancer patients for nearly 9 years in the academic setting, and this is a great book that provides a fair and balanced approach to the oft ignored subject of diet and cancer risk. Dr. Prendergast provides well-researched and well-referenced recommendations for anyone who is looking to reduce their cancer risk. Dr. Prendergast uses archived data that is based on scientific method and is from controlled clinical trials whenever possible, making these lifestyle modifications as close to medically sound as possible. These guidelines on eating foods that are healthy are also reasonably "doable" in the aim of reducing one's risk of developing cancer or recurrent cancer. This book is an outstanding resource for breast cancer patients and their family alike. I highly recommend it and will be directing my patients to it, to help them through their treatments.

Preventing Breast Cancer Has Never Been So Delicious

Occasionally a book comes across my desk that profoundly changes my thinking about a topic, and even changes my life entirely. Breast Cancer: Reduce Your Risk With Foods You Love is such a book.

You could say that I am a bit of a health nut. I eat an exclusively raw diet. My upbringing included the use of herbal remedies and homeopathy (secretly I want to become a homeopathic physician, even if only to treat my immediate family members). And I practice yoga as often as time permits. However, getting my husband and children to follow suit has not been easy.

Now, though, after reading this groundbreaking book, I have very specific and scientifically proven reasons for changing the diet and lifestyle of my family.

The book starts off with an explanation of what reducing risk of cancer actually means in terms of statistics. I found this enormously helpful, and not the usual regurgitated CDC garbage that I was expecting. Then it goes into general guidelines for preventing breast cancer, such as painting a colorful diet, moderate exercise, and minimizing environmental toxins.

Next there is a whole section devoted to the top 10 foods for breast health. I can't say that I was surprised to see the foods listed. We all pretty much know by now to increase our intake of foods high in antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids. However, I still gained a lot of information about not only why we should be eating more broccoli, but also how to prepare and enjoy foods like soy.

Foods to avoid were also covered in detail, with recommendations about how to substitute repeat offenders with healthier alternatives. I found this to be extremely helpful, since a lot of the foods Dr. Pendergrast mentioned can frequently be found in my own cupboards. In addition, some modern toxic inventions were mentioned, as well as how to reduce contamination from them.

A book on the topic of preventing breast cancer would be incomplete without information about what to eat during treatment and preventing recurrence. Dr. Pendergrast treats this portion very delicately, yet firmly, with a brief note for breast cancers survivors.

Finally, the book ends with a study of integrative medicine, which the author wisely predicts to be future of health care. Eight domains of health for prevention and wellness are discussed, giving the reader a complete picture of how to obtain an optimal quality of life.

One of my favorite parts, though, is the Breast Health Action Plan, found in Appendix 1. Basically, it is a worksheet that helps you track your health behaviors and set goals in 14 different areas talked about in the book. Things like eating berries and avoiding toxic doses of alcohol and grilled meat. It is awesome.

Overall, I found the book to be extremely informative and well-researched. It is very enjoyable to read as well, with personal anecdotes and third-person narratives of real people who have been affected by this devastating disease. This book is a must read for every woman of any age. I especially recommend it to mothers of daughters, since the eating habits we pass on to our children lay the foundation of health for the rest of their lives.

Reduce Your Risk With Food You Love

I have received and am well into reading this amazing book by Dr. Pendergrast. It excites me to know that I am giving my body it's best defense against this disease by eating certain foods. I have always been very conscious of the foods I eat, now it is even more important for me to make choices every day that will decrease my chance of having breast cancer.

It is great to have all this information in an easy to read, to the point format. What should I eat, is exercise important, and what should I avoid??....the answers are in this one book. AND for those who have had breast cancer, there is some useful information for you also. I am so aware of certain actions I can take to reduce the risk and I have the "10 specific foods which are powerhouses of prevention." Thank you Dr. Pendergrast

An excellent guide to Buenos Aires, but ...

The Lonely Planet Buenos Aires (Lonely Planet City Guide) by Wayne Bernhardson is an excellent little book, well worth the money I paid for it.
It has an excellent map section and includes areas outside the federal capital that may be of interest to some travellers.
Photos are bright, vibrant, and most importantly, are a true representation of what you are likely to see.
Information is abundant and generally of high quality. I found the guide quite useful, I used it on many occassions, and thoroughly enjoyed what it suggested to see.
There is only one thing that could better the Lonely Planet Buenos Aires City Guide (1996), an updated edition - unfortunately this one was already old when I used it in the second half of 1998.
Congratulations Wayne, keep up the good work.

We checked out all the guide books on Buenos Aires and this handy little guide is the best around. We run a Spanish language school in Buenos Aires and although an update would be welcome, you can't get a better book for just under $ 10.

Waste of money unless you need the maps.

I'm a big Lonely Planet fan but somehow this guide slipped through the cracks (and into the trashpile). It's nothing more than a generic checklist of hotels, restaurants, sights. Often, it fails to provide the perspective you need to customize your travel -- whether that's better historical background or more colorful descriptions. It'll offer a wealth of options, but it gives you no direction.

Very good!

In 1978-9 worked through parts of Newman's 'Marine Hydrodynamics', corresponding treatments of lift and drag on a hydrofoil in Landau-Lifshits' Hydrodynamics, and Milne-Thompson's 'Theoretical Aerodynamics'. All these books complement and reenforce each other. Newman, like L-L, works from the equations of hydrodynamics while M-T bases his treatment largely on complex velocity potentials (for very high aspect ratio foils). I have only recently discovered McCormick's book and recommend it heartily as well because of it's emphasis on practicality and simple approximations (a 4-vortex approximation to a wing, e.g., very pretty!), and because he does not hand-wave but instead covers all the derivations thoroughly, if simply. I can understand that some engineers may complain about this book, but Prandtl would not have been one of them, I think.

Has material that no other book covers. I wish the book was longer and had examples. However, as is it will be of great help to engineering students and researchers. I particularly enjoy the focus this book has to computer programming for aerospace engineering

Useless for school

Had to buy this book for an Aircraft Performance class. This book is straight trash. For all homework assignments I used three books: John Anderson's Fund. of Aerodynamics, James John's Gas Dynamics book, and a Fluid Mechanics book I had from the previous semester. Notice how I didn't use this book for anything beside the problem statements...
