Review
“Entering biblical studies can be like listening to one side of a conversation taking place in another language. What They Don’t Tell You is like having a friend who knows the language. As both a pastor and biblical scholar, Michael Brown is well positioned to help students understand the academic biblical world and connect it with their experience in the church. Full of short, clear advice, What They Don’t Tell You helps students to see the Bible in a new way and get the most from classes and commentaries.”
―Susan E. Hylen, Associate Professor of New Testament, Candler School of Theology, Emory University
“I came away from this rereading of What They Don’t Tell You overjoyed that this book has been revised. Brown’s book is directed toward students who encounter academic biblical studies for the first time, and this book does indeed offer them an invaluable companion on this journey. But what a gift to teachers of biblical studies as well: here in one place are the answers to all the questions students bring to every semester of biblical studies. Start the course with this book, and students will be able and eager to engage whatever biblical material we teach them!”
―Gail R. O’Day, Dean and Professor of New Testament and Preaching, Wake Forest University School of Divinity
“This book is written with knowledge and skill from a place of experience and with a love for biblical studies. Dr. Michael Joseph Brown offers educators and students an accessible framework and vocabulary for approaching biblical studies. The text is for all who are serious about the critical study of the Bible, and it provides clarity for students entering into the oftentimes confusing world of biblical scholarship.”
―Sally Holt, Professor of Religion, Belmont University
“The second edition of Michael Joseph Brown’s ‘survivor’s guide’ should be a supplemental textbook in every introductory course on the Bible. Prof. Brown’s ‘rules of thumb’ are the wise advice of not only a survivor but also an expert in the teaching of biblical studies. A welcome guide to every student who is beginning the journey, since it captures the joy and the pain of an experience that many of us have shared!”
―Emerson B. Powery, Professor of Biblical Studies, Messiah College

Essential read for the novice and serious student of the Bible
By Terry L. Clees
Brown gives advice on studying the Bible in a clear and succinct maner. The book is easy to read, yet deep in its message. I would recommend it to both the novice and advanced student of the Bible.

What Brown Does Tell You
By Chad A. Moore
Faith threatened by Bible study? Well, it depends on what kind of Bible study you're speaking of. In the academic arena, the student of Scripture had better be prepared for more than Sunday School. Such a student will find a worthy introduction and guide to the field of biblical studies in what Brown has to say. I should add, that this is an introduction to the field as is it today represented in the mainline seminaries and universities, and therefore needs to be balanced with several conservative works for a fuller representation of the field. This said, the student of the Scriptures will get a good idea of where the field is at today.
The author, Michael Joseph Brown is a professor at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, with a M.Div. and Ph.D from the University of Chicago. Thus, he is more than qualified to offer the would-be student of academic biblical studies an intro to this field.
In the first chapter he outlines the purpose and method of academic biblical studies as opposed to the devotional study of the Bible. In the following chapters, he gives 28 rules of thumb for reading and interpreting biblical texts, and for understanding and surviving biblical scholarship. I would say that most of the rules are very sound...though not all. As Brown himself would say, read everything with a critical eye. However, the rules of thumb for understanding biblical scholarship are particularly good and, well, honest.
He writes from a moderately critical perspective, and though his persuasion is always evident, he does not aggressively push his conclusions on the reader. He is evidently aware of the limits of all biblical study...even his own. Certainly frustrating to the conservative student will be the obvious skepticism for the historicity of the events recorded in in the Bible, but I would say read on. Don't look here for a proper understanding of what the Gospel is, but rather to understand the methods, assumptions, and rules of critical scholarship. Whether you like critical scholarship or not, if you dare enter the field of biblical studies, this is what you will contend with.
Much biblical scholarship today, including critical scholarship, is full of overstated cases, imbalance, and arrogance, but Professor Brown comes across as equitable, sincere, and with a real desire to help the student study the Bible academically without losing their faith in God. Although I do not endorse all of what Brown says, I think that students desirous of entering the field could read this and benefit greatly from it. At the very least, it will wake them up to realize that seminary isn't Sunday School, and to their likely surprise will greatly challenge their faith.

One thing I would have liked to see in this book is a guide for ...
By J. Zinnel
Having recently graduated with a degree in Biblical studies, I wish I had read this book five years ago. That being said, here are some thoughts from someone who had to go through the very things Dr. Brown describes in his book.
I debated between giving this book three or four stars. I decided on the latter mostly because, while the book has some shortcomings, the beginning undergrad Bible student will find it overall helpful.
Brown begins the book by drawing the much-needed line between the academic study of the Bible and your average church Bible study. He then moves on to describe the different approaches to biblical criticism. For the bulk of the book, Brown expounds on a list of his "rules of thumb" for studying the Bible in an academic setting. Most of these rules will prove to be beneficial to the study. Some could be left out or combined.
One thing I would have liked to see in this book is a guide for the student writing his first biblical studies paper. This seems to be one of the most difficult things for a new student to do, yet Brown was widely silent on this subject. I would have liked to see a more in-depth section on choosing good commentaries and such as sources. I remember writing my first Bible paper in Old Testament Introduction I and totally butchering it. I think half of my sources were cheesy Christian internet sites. A section on helping the student prepare for his first paper would be nice.
Overall, this book was a decent intro work for surviving biblical studies. Brown fulfills what he set out to do. I think a first-time student will be a bit intimidated by this book, but I would still recommend it for any person starting a degree in biblical studies.
