Great Zombie & Survival Story!

Being a book buyer in the mindset of "safety in numbers," I was unsure if this book would live up to my expectations because there was only one review out there at the time that I bought it for my Kindle... Wow - did I get a lot for my money or what? This meaty book started out as a series of what I thought were merely unrelated vignettes, but the author was going somewhere signficant with all of it. There are so many stories going on in this one lone book, and they all tie together in the end, I didn't notice any loose ends at all.

I loved the characterizations and how real the people in the book seemed... And as in real-life, many of the coarsest people in the book turned out to be the most competent and big hearted down deep. This is an epic story describing the hurdles that surviors of a real zombie acopalypse may need to overcome, and not just from zombies! As a bonus, you are not left hanging there wondering what happened to anyone... and it has a great ending, which is a prerequisite for me to write a 5 star review. I also liked the humor of some of the characters, care for family, self-doubt, winning against all odds -- real life is like that too, which makes it even better reading.

The only thing, which I have noticed in a couple of zombie books I have recently read, is that fictional characters in their 50s and 60s are continuously referred to as the "old guy", "old man", etc., etc. (although the older characters generally show more intelligence from their years of life experience, i.e., "don't sweat the small stuff."). Dude (sorry -- not just you but many authors) you must be a young person, like in your 20s or 30s. When you get up to where I am (haha, won't tell), you realize that you are just as vital, intelligent and strong as you were 20-30 years earlier, and you will wonder who the heck are these "old guys" that younger people referring to? "Older than 40" doesn't mean feeble, weak, slow-witted. Just wait and see. :)

Summary: really great... and for the price, you really can't go wrong, especially if you love this genre. I recommend this to every fan.

The best of its kind
By Charles F. Kartman
What is it about Kindle and zombies? Pretty soon, zombie books will have infected all the rest, and Kindle will be populated solely by the dead. "Life Among the Dead", makes that outcome a not altogether bad prospect, since it proves that some of these novels are animated by something special. I don't claim to be an expert on the genre, but Mr. Cotton has written the best zombie novel that I have read to date, peopled by interesting characters who intersect in some surprising ways. There is, I suppose, a need for any zombie tale worth its salt to shock, and this one manages to do that in sometimes novel but always horrifyingly believable ways. And yet the reader never wants to shout at the characters for doing things that seem outrageously stupid; rather, there are moments of courage, sacrifice, and pathos that make everything all the more compelling.

The main character is a reservist named Dan Williamson who wants desperately to find his wife and baby. I will not describe more but his story is gripping, as are those of other characters who avoided being bitten in the first days of the infection's spread. Dan has some military skills, but he is not an elite soldier by any means. He is, however, a brave leader and one that the reader hopes will survive against the odds.

It isn't really worth it to complain about typos in Kindle books, but how many times did I see "passed" for "past", indicating an over-reliance on spell check rather than the old Mark One Eyeball. That complaint notwithstanding, it seems to me that zombie books must, at their core, be about holding out hope when hope is rapidly disappearing. "Life Among the Dead" hits the zombie right in the head.

Worth the cost

It took me a solid week of good reading to get through this book. The writer comes full circle with a lot of the characters, and isn't afraid to hit nerves with readers by killing off any of the characters that are introduced, especially well liked ones. The reader is also faced with some of the terrible decisions that survivors must face. While other writers may skirt the issues that are prevalent in our minds, Daniel Cotton hits them head on with lifted up black 4x4 with a hinged skylight (you'll get it after reading). HIGHLY RECOMMEND for anyone interested in Post-Apocalyptic or zombie-related literature.
