An excellent companion and starting point

Kierkegaard is enjoying something of a revival of late, with many of his works appearing in new editions, and a major new biography available. The English-speaking world has long been aware of Kierkegaard without being very familiar with his work and issues. One might be surprised that Kierkegaard is not better known, since one of his primary focuses upon philosophy is that it begins and ends with the individual - in many ways, he is anti-Hegelian looking for a way of relating existence to the individual, and not to universals.

Kierkegaard was very much a cynic, but still remained a faithful Christian all of his life, if not a faithful adherent to the institution of the church. Kierkegaard was also a satirist and wit, and sometimes it is difficult to discern where that aspect ends and the serious philosophical work begins. He is often considered the first of the Existentialists, but in many ways his work does not quite fit that category.

This collection contains selections from the following major and minor works of Kierkegaard.

This collection is no mere collection of quotable-quotes or of key passages, but gives generous inclusion of major sections of the works. Kierkegaard did not write in traditional academic or philosophical structure, so some of his writing is difficult to get through. Part personal reflection, part polemic, part analysis, part literary creative flourish - all of these come together in a fascinating way.

Kierkegaard deals with issues of estrangement and alienation, despair, universals and abstractions, individuality and subjectivity. Kierkegaard sees the person as existing in three different levels - the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious. These are inter-related but distinct in many ways; as they involve the breadth of human experience, Kierkegaard is no mere philosopher, but also a sociologist, a psychologist, a theologian, an historian, and much more.

This is an excellent one-volume edition of Kierkegaard's work, from which one may gain much insight. If coupled with the recent biography by Joakim Garff, it is a very handy reference for Kierkegaard's primary texts together with the insightful writing of Garff.

The Best Place To Start Reading Kierkegaard

Many consider it objectionable (probably Kierkegaard among them!) to chop up philosophical works so literary in style into pieces to be patched together in an anthology. Others would note that a philosopher is best introduced through a painstaking reading of a classic and definitive text, and thus Plato is to be met in "The Republic," Nietzsche in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," and the later Wittgenstein in "Philosophical Investigations." In the case of Kierkegaard, however, no one work adequately expresses the multi-faceted nature of his messages. His individual works are incomplete as representations of his overall vision. I find, anyway, that they each represent a finely crafted meditation on a crucial aspect of his thought which cannot be fully understood without having all the other aspects in mind. They serve more like chapters in a larger book than they stand independently on their own. That's why Bretall's anthology which presents them as a whole is so valuable.
Bretall also avoids chopping up chapters and ripping quips and humorous digressions or controversial statements out of their context. For the most part he presents key chapters in their entirety and helps to reproduce their context for the reader either by explaining it in his helpful introductions or by presenting enough chapters from a given work that the context of a particular chapter is clear.
Understanding Kierkegaard's context and that of his writings and that of the chapters within them is so crucial to fruitful engagement of his ideas that this compiled tornado of thought that Bretall provides is the best place to start reading him.
But then again, I could be bias because that's how I started reading him...

An Excellent Primer on Kierkegaard

In a philosophy course on an introduction to Kierkegaard that I took in graduate school, this was one of the texts we used. It's an excellent primer for someone who has relatively little or no knowledge of the "father of existentialism."

I highly recommend it; but to any lover of wisdom, don't stop with just this volume. Princeton University Press has published almost his entire corpus operam, so if you get the wherewithal, check them out too.

Essential for Hematologists,Lab Professionals&Students Alike

This is the best color atlas I have seen. As a student, this has proven to be an invaluable tool in laboratory. I have recommended it to every other student in my laboratory. The photographs have amazing clarity and consistency. The text beginning each section and descriptive text following each photograph provides indispensable additional information for identification and understanding. It is very rare to see the backgrounds for each of the photographs a pristine white, so that the fine details can actually be distinguished. Each section is written with great care and with complete forethought. Even though this may not matter to many, but to me, the fact that is was spiral bound shows the amount of consideration to detail the author put into this atlas. There is nothing more frustrating then trying to keep a book open to the correct page, the ability for a book to be able to be lain flat on a table, and the having no problems with binding (e.g. broken binding resulting in loose pages). The comprehensive index helps you find a cell's information and/or photograph with just one quick glance. The amount of pages doesn't even begin to show the amount of knowledge that is encompassed in this book. You can believe this, as I go thru my student courses & when I begin my career as a clinical laboratory professional, this book with remain on my shelves as a ready-reference for any questions I may encounter along the way.

It's like a "Lesson a day" . I have received many inspiring suggestion. The book is also very realistic without giving false hopes.

Let's be Realistic: Let's do the impossible!

What if there was an absolute way to land in your dream land? Would you take the path? What if somebody told you that the path is not from without, but rather, from within? This book by Bodo Schafer helped me realize the importance of making sound decisions which automatically shape the type of person I will become tomorrow. It is strategically knowing when to hold on, when to stubbornly cling on something and when to let go. It is being real: Let's do the impossible! This intriguing read bombards one with a hard yet simple fact, one after another, making one to open their eyes and spring out of slumber. A few instances of humour here and there also adds to ones anxiety to listen to the end, not mentioning the logical construction and flow of ideas. His peculiar integration of topics such as health into a rather inspirational piece is what raised my curiosity. It is not only about eating healthy, it is eating less! And since the future is not the same as yesterday or even today, it is time to step out with faith and do the impossible. In his chapter on giving 110%, Bodo clearly illustrates why striving for higher limits can help one achieve what he had never imagined of. Being a motivational speaker, this book challenged me why I should start ditching the comfort zone of only delivering what people love, to delivering the value they need. This is an awesome audio that I would definitely recommend to students in my mentorship academy.

Not Bad, Not Thrilling

I have long been a fan of June Thomson and my includes The Secret Files, Documents, Chronicles, Journals and Notebooks of Sherlock Holmes and Holmes and Watson. My ratings have always been in the super to superlative realms. Not here. Although a decent outing, the information seems disorganized, the narrative seems to lose its way and, although the elements are all there, they are not put together in a manner which keeps the reader glued to his seat unlike her other offerings. Definitely buy the book. It isn't money wasted although oce you get some of her other offerings you'll understand my less than stellar marks.

June Thomson has a greal love for the Holmes stories . I used to read the stories as bedtime reading and I never thought about the habits of Mr. Holmes . I never thought ,for example ,that he might be a cocaine addict. Holmes was a brilliant detective . I watched the movies made in the last century in which the stories had been adapted and the actors who played Holmes and Watson filled out my conception of these characters in the stories. However there has been a sea change and there have been novelists who have emphasized all the Holmesian bad habits including even the housekeeper is a person whom Holmes has difficulty with. I did not see any evidence of this coldness between Holmes and the housekeeper in either the Conan Doyle stories or the black and white movie adaptations. Thomson is excellent in skilfully making the sense of location of the events oif her story.

She is excellent in creating suspense and always moving her story forward. and never forgetting the limitations of crime detection in the late nineteenth century.The problem with the novel is that at the end of the novel the mysterious lady in black whom Holmes has observed on the cove is just another wife who has been drained of her fortune by a conniving husband .Holmes has some of the positive characteristics of the Doyle stories and Thomson beautifully suggests that Holmes wants to restore the olds friendship with Watson which Thomson suggests was destroyed by the second marriage of Watson. and the last chapter there is an inference of success. The Holmes of the Thomson book is a nicer character than some of the other Holmes' characters in other Holmes ' novels and closer to the Doyle stories than in the recent TV series.;. Holmes is a gentleman and as in the Doyle stories he wants a married woman to enjoy her inheritance and Thomson beings into the story the effect on Victorian women of the Married Women's Property Act..Even if the ending is sad in some respects , Thomson suggests that even a great detective cannot push aside fate. Now that the Holmes of the Thomson is fully formed ,it is my hope that there will a new story will be on the bookshop shelf shortly, ;

An inspirational compendium of martyrs past and present

Jesus Freaks is a collection of scores of accounts of martyrs around the world, from the first martyr (St. Stephen) to modern martyrs in places like the Sudan, Indonesia and Iran. Readers familiar with John Foxe's Book of Martyrs will recognize a lot of his material has been incorporated into this book, but there is enough new material to make this a valuable addition to the library.
Jesus Freaks was written with Richard Wurmbrand's Voice of the Martyrs organization. Dr. Wurmbrand is one of those faithful Christian leaders who suffered many years in Communist prisons, viciously tortured for their faith. (He testified before U.S. Congress after his release was ultimately secured, stripping to the waist to reveal his torture wounds.) Their stories are moving ones.
This makes me better appreciate the risks of sharing our faith and love in Christ as I get to know Christians in other countries, and see persecution intensify in lands considered historically "Christian."

Great for Any Mouse Fan!

My 2 1/2 year old twins love the Mouse books and when I saw this book, I had to get it. It's perfect for young children because it has a simple and easy to follow storyline. The board book is great because it's sturdy and should withstand the toddler years. I like the story because it combines an Easter egg hunt with colors and counting. Each page has one or two sentences and points out a different color and number of eggs. I highly recommend this book to any Mouse fan!

Read it twice!

My toddler (almost 2 yr old boy) is really into books and this one is his newest favorite. I always have to read it at least twice in a row!
It is a well made board book with nice pictures and colors. It's not too busy but very detailed. And there is a nice surprise at the end when we discover just WHO has been hiding these eggs all over the house! haha

My daughter still enjoyed the book

I bought this to put in my daughter's Easter Basket (shes 4). I bought it thinking it was similar to the other story line...of giving a mouse a cookie, and then seeing the chain of events afterwards. But this is not that. It's just the same mouse, but that's it. Maybe it says that on the description, but I didn't see it. My daughter still enjoyed the book. It was just a short read...So just so others are aware...if you're expecting that storyline, this is not the same. But it was great for her basket and we've already read it 10 times (so she must like it). =)
