About the Author
Zhang Ting-liang, Dipl. Ac., was born in Shanghai. He graduated from college with a B.A. degree in English. Because of his lifetime interest in Chinese medicine, he got a job as translator at the Shanghai College of Chinese Medicine where he met Bob Flaws in 1982. Zhang was Bob's translator in 1982 and 83 and Honora's translator in 198 and 8 . In 1985, Bob asked Zhang to translate a book on Chinese medical gynecology. This was subsequently published by Blue Poppy Press as A Handbook of Traditional Chinese Gynecology. In 1986, Bob and Honora sponsored Zhang to come to the United States.

Zhang came to the United States as a B.A. student in psychology at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, CO. At the same time, Zhang taught and studied at Bob and Honora's small acupuncture school, the Dechen Yonten Dzo Institute of Chinese Medicine. Zhang graduated from both schools and went on to become a registered acupuncturist in the State of Colorado. He also became a social worker for Asian immigrants in Denver. Zhang's other publishing credits include translating A Handbook of Traditional Chinese Dermatology; Shaolin Secret Formulas; and The Treatment of Cancer by Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine. Zhang currently conducts a general private practice in acupuncture and Chinese medicine in Boulder, CO where he lives with his wife, Yu Mei, and son, Jing.

This is a reference book and not really a text or descriptive reading. It is mainly a list, with terse but very useful commentary, of recipes for making helpful remedies. The ingredients are not all easily available in most North American towns. Many ingredients will not be easy to get, even at a proper Chinese herbal store. Still, the documentation is sufficiently useful that any resourceful person will be able to produce the described medicines. By making this available to a general audience, the author has given humanity a very great gift. I just hope we will use it properly. It can be a great help for an extremely broad range of medical needs.

Good reference to formulas for treatment of injuries.

This book lists many formulas to concote pills, poltice and medicinal wine to treat injuries arising from "falls and strikes" typically from martial art training. Some of the formulas however, are also useful to prepare and kept for use in household emergencies. A word of caution though, always see a doctor for serious injuries such as dislocations or broken bones. This is not a self treat book. For a non martial artist, I find that the formulas are especially useful in treating bruises and sprains.
Although the names of the herbs are given in Latin and Pinyin descriptions, it may be difficult to have the formulas filled by your regular chinese herbalist as most of them are literate only in chinese characters.
For the serious reader, it may be a good idea to invest in a good materia medica as a companion book to this one.

`The Computer Algebra community has been waiting for years for this book to appear. ...the book is a masterpiece and can be recommended to everyone interested in the algorithms for computer algebra, either as a reference for further research or just to give the casual user an idea why things work as good (or as bad) as they do in computer algebra packages. ...the recommendation would be clear: Buy this book! As it stands now my only advice is to stay away from this book, because you might be tempted to buy it anyway (at least I was).'

Clear and understandable, but some bugs

I found this book very useful as a reference while writing a small computer algebra system. It's a definate must-have for all the hordes of people out there who are rewriting subsets of Maple, Mathematica, etc. The explanation of the theory is relatively clear and helpful so that a not-so-theory-inclined person (such as myself) can understand the material. The cost of such clarity is a loss of some conciseness so someone who lives and breathes abstract algebra may desire a more esoteric book (like Winkler's). The biggest flaw of the book are the poorly debugged algorithms. Almost every algorithm presented in the book has some sort of minor flaw with serious reprecussions on correctness. This results in much frustration if you're actually trying to implement the algorithms.

an excellent treatment

We used this book in an advanced undergraduate/early graduate class in computer algebra. The book provides a concise and rigorous, but very readable introduction to computational algebra theory, with algorithms written in pseudo code.
Assuming proficiency in programming, as further pre-requisite I would suggest an undergraduate course in abstract algebra (or equivalent mathematical maturity) for maximum benefit.
An excellent collection of algorithms, proofs, and advanced introductory material, written in a (comparatively) breezy style.

Reconceptualising Professional Learning develops these issues through specific contemporary cases focused on one of the book’s three main themes: (1) professionals’ knowing in practice, (2) professionals’ work arrangements and technologies, or (3) professional responsibility. Each chapter draws upon innovative theory to highlight the sociomaterial webs through which professional learning may be reconceptualised. Authors are based in Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and the USA as well as the UK and their cases are based in a range of professional settings including medicine, teaching, nursing, engineering, social services, the creative industries, and more.

By presenting detailed accounts of these themes from a sociomaterial perspective, the book opens new questions and methodological approaches. These can help make more visible what is often invisible in today’s messy dynamics of professional learning, and point to new ways of configuring educational support and policy for professionals.

This is a deeply insightful book that speaks to women with disordered eating of all types and severities. I've found that one of the most terrifying aspects of living with an eating disorder is the sense of stark isolation from others that we feel, fueled by the powerful secrets that we keep. As a woman recovered from bulimia, I was appreciative of Dr. Johnston's ability to help me see the many commonalities among women who suffer with eating disorders.
Johnston uses stories, myth and symbol to help explain the emotional and spiritual struggles that women encounter as they seek to regain a balance between heart and mind. Her description of the labyrinth as a metaphor of women's healing path serves as a gentle reminder that healing from disordered relationships with food is not a simple, straight-forward, linear process; and that being judgmental of our "progress" toward healing can only hinder our journeys.
I have read this book several times and have shared it with my mother, friends and colleagues. It has been a catalyst for many emotionally and intellectually fruitful discussions. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

This book lifted my spirits when I needed it most

I feel compelled to share with potential readers of Anita Johnston's EATING IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON how much this book has helped me on my recovery from bulimia. As a woman with an eating disorder, let me assure that the path to recovery is a long difficult journey, but when things get tough, to this day, I turn to this book.
The concept is different than anything I have read to date, and I have read a lot. I love analysis, thought and literature. Johnston, who, by the way, runs an acclaimed eating disorder clinic in Hawaii uses multicultural fairy tales and myths to illustrate to the reader important steps on the journey to recovery. The story I return to again and again is that of the Tutu bird.
Briefly put, there was a young girl who lived in a village in Africa where the people were starving. Like all the other village children, she was sent out to fetch the animals that had been captured in the village traps overnight so that the villagers might eat. When she got there, there was a Tutu bird in the trap. His song was so sweet that she set him free. She returned to the village and explained what happened. The villagers were so angry that they buried her alive in a mud hut and left her to die. She cried and cried. One day, she heard a sweet song and a ray of light came though the top of her hut. The next day she heard the song again and realized that it was the Tutu bird. The bird was pecking a hole in the mud hut to free her! The bird then dropped in fruits and nuts. This continued until the girl was well fed and the Tutu bird could free her. She returned to an astonished village with the Tutu bird nourished compared to the thin villagers and then left with the Tutu bird to go into the forest forever. The point of the story: Find your voice, listen to it and don't stray. It will serve you in the end no matter how bleak things seem at the time.
If your mind is a literary one - if you are a person who finds deep meaning in stories/books - then PLEASE purchase this book. It has instrumental in my recovery and I really want to thank Ms. Johnston for that. I hope EATING IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON will speak to you as it has to me.

Lots of laughs! Hope they make this into a movie!

I am always a happy camper when ordering from Amazon! They never let me down. We pre-ordered the book during the Summer and it arrived the day of it's release. People don't notice the small stuff but I do. As I took the book out of the package I noticed the book has a smooth texture on the front cover. The book cover in general has a smooth grip- like texture, lol. I always love the smell of a new book but the smooth outside texture of the book adds a good feature to the book.
The book has comic like pictures, but don't think it's a comic strip type book overall. It is a well worded book from the first page to the last page (217 pages overall) each page has a complete word filled page but the pictures adds to the imagination of the child reading this book. My son started reading this book series at 8. He's now 10 and he LOVES this book series so much he looks forward to the new books that come out and every once in a while re-reads the older book series. We even have family movie nights and I don't mind watching the couple movies that have been made from the "Diary of A Whimpy Kid" book series. I'm 32 and I find parts of the movie hillarious so I can only imagine reading this book as a kid. I can't say enough good things about this book or any other book from the series. If you're a parent like me, you'd rather watch your child read VS. Playing video games or watching TV programs. At least while reading it engages a child's imagination as well as improving their spelling. Some studies has shown that kids, especially those that are more visual learners, spelling improves the more they read. :)
I will be on the lookout for more books by this same Author (Jeff Kinney). Don't hesitate to buy the book for your child (ren). I took a glimpse of a few pages already while my son is still at school and it's pretty funny! Ha ha ha. I posted some pictures for previewing. :-D

Classic book on the realities of RW. Recommend its reading and rereading by all officers and NCO's

Was glad that I read and studied the original Street Without Joy before my first tour in Vietnam. Understanding the lessons of the French and Viet Minh save my bacon more that once. On my first tour on the way to Plei Me, we avoided a classic ambush by having an observation OH-13 accompany us. A luxury the French did not have. On my second tour in the same battalion, knowing the siege tactics practiced by the VC (the old VM) we were able to crush the attack on Dak Seang. Never understood why the lessons learned by the French were not taught in US Army schools.

Bernard Fall Still Relevant

Even though Fall wrote about a war even farther removed in history than the American War in Vietnam, his insights are still incredibly valuable. His feel for the Vietnamese people coupled with his knowledge of French customs and operations is fascinating. In review, Fall's work holds up extremely well.

Nobody should begin to try to understand the catastrophe that U.S. involvement in Vietnam (& indeed in Laos & Cambodia) became without first reading Bernard B. Fall's 'Street Without Joy'. Many of America's generals read it, but as events show, they didn't understand it or take its lessons to heart.
Fall's account of the French Union Forces' experience in Southeast Asia is gritty, down-to-earth, fearless, & accurate. He went beyond the official communiques & press releases, beyond the brief of the usual war correspondents of the French Indochina War & thus, into 'Street Without Joy', Fall perspicaciously packed wealth of detail & nuance.
'Street Without Joy' is a bit dated in lexicon (but this latest edition contains an apt new foreword that does much to help the reader gain a useful appreciation of Fall's viewpoint), but its central truths remain accurate & valid & worthy of absorption by citizens, politicians, & military leaders alike. This book is a "must read" for any Vietnam-era scholar or writer, & many of its lessons continue to apply today in the war against terrorism.
Of course one should follow reading 'Street Without Joy' with a reading of Fall's masterpiece on the siege of Dien Bien Phu, 'Hell in a Very Small Place'. This pair of books has enduring value as histories, & as illumination for present-day & future citizens, soldiers, & leaders.
