PREFACE If there is a college course that is more exciting for students than the introduction to sociology, we don't know what it is. Both of us began our careers as students taking the "intro course," and we both found it to be life-changing. Over the (many) years since then, we have received thousands of e-mail messages from students that, in different ways and using different words, say pretty much the same thing: "Sociology has given me a new way to see the world around me, it has changed the way I think about myself and our society, it has given me knowledge and skills that I can use every day." Why is sociology so exciting? First, understanding how society operates is a source of power, helping us to recognize the opportunities and challenges that frame our lives and to see that society is a human creation that is subject to change. Second, sociology is liberating. It frees us from the belief that we alone are responsible for our life situations and, by showing how society shapes our world, opens the door to new possibilities. Third, sociology is plain fun. Looking at our families, workplaces, campuses, and local communities with a sociological eye, we suddenly recognize patterns and processes that were always there but went unnoticed. To learn to see sociologically is to have the world around you come alive as it never has before. What could be more fun than that? Sociology is also a vast and diverse body of knowledge that stretches back more than 150 years. Classic articles—thirty in all—are sociological statements of recognized importance and lasting significance. Included here are the ideas of sociology's founders and shakers--including Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Georg Simmel, Ferdinand T�nnies, as well as Margaret Mead, W. E. B. Du Bois, Louis Wirth, George Herbert Mead, Thomas Robert Malthus, and Charles Horton Cooley. There are also many more recent contributions by Alfred Kinsey, Jessie Bernard, Robert Merton, Erving Goffman, Peter Berger, Kingsley Davis and Wilbert Moore, C. Wright Mills, Talcott Parsons, Leslie White, and Jo Freeman. We realize that not everyone will agree about precisely which selections should be called "classics." Thirty contemporary selections focus on current sociological issues, controversies, and applications. These articles show sociologists at work and demonstrate the importance of ongoing research. The twenty-three cross-cultural selections offer sociological insights about the striking cultural diversity of the United States and the larger world. Included are well-known works such as "Body Ritual among the Nacirema" by Horace Miner, "India's Sacred Cow" by Marvin Harris, "The Amish: A Small Society" by John Hostetler, J. M. Carrier's "Homosexuality in Cross-Cultural Perspective," and Elaine Leeder's "Domestic Violence: A Cross-Cultural View." Other articles focus on Arab women and social research, learning to be a doctor in Canada, prostitution around the world, the ways in which global inequality benefits rich countries including the United States, the practice of female genital mutilation, how courtship and marriage differ around the world, global population increase, the health of Native American men, the central role played by Japanese mothers in their children's schooling, and differences in the abortion movements that are found in various countries. Cross-cultural selections broaden students' understanding of other cultures and, in the process, sharpen their understanding of our own society. ORGANIZATION OF THE READER This reader parallels the chapter sequence common to textbooks used in introductory sociology. Instructors can easily and effectively use these articles in a host of other courses, just as teachers can assign articles in whatever order they wish. For each of the twenty-three general topics, a cluster of three to five articles is presented, including at least one classic, at least one contemporary, and at least one cross-cultural selection. The expansive coverage of these eighty-three articles ensures that instructors can choose readings well suited to their own classes, and at the lowest cost. The first grouping of articles describes the distinctive sociological perspective, brings to life the promise and pitfalls of sociological research, and demonstrates the discipline's applications to a variety of issues. The selections that follow emphasize key concepts: culture, society, socialization, social interaction, groups and organizations, deviance, and the importance of sexuality to our society. The focus then turns to various dimensions of social inequality, with attention to class, gender, race and ethnicity, and aging. The major social institutions are covered next, including the economy and work; politics, government, and the military; families; religion; education; and health and medicine. The final sets of articles explore dimensions of global transformation—including population growth, urbanization, the natural environment, social movements, and social change. A NOTE ON LANGUAGE One of the advantages of using this reader is allowing students to read the exact words of dozens of notable sociologists. The editors have assembled their selections from the sources in their original form; we have not altered any author's language. At the same time, we want students and instructors to know that some of the older selections—especially the classics—use male pronouns rather than more contemporary gender-neutral terminology, and one article employs the term "Negro." We have not changed the language in any article, wishing not to violate the historical authenticity of any document. That said, we urge faculty and students, with the original articles in hand, to consider the importance of language and how it has changed in their analysis of the author's ideas. TEACHING FEATURES Seeing Ourselves has two features that enhance the learning of students. First, a brief introduction, placed at the beginning of each selection, summarizes the main argument and highlights important issues to keep in mind while reading the article. Second, at the end of each article are three "Critical-Thinking Questions," which develop the significance of the reading, help students evaluate their own learning, and stimulate class discussion. the absolutely perfect text for an intro to soc class

I used this text for an intro to sociology class at a major university. I love that it is different from the run-of-the-mill intro textbook; instead of 20+ chapters of terms, definitions, etc., this book contains whole or excerpted readings, many of which are classic sociological articles (for example, On Being Sane in Insane Places and The McDonaldization of America). With very few exceptions, this book contains the readings I would choose to assign for an intro class if I weren't using a textbook.

Second Language Cooperative Learning.

This book extends cooperative learning for second language learners. Cooperative learning is very important for second language learners. My complaint is that there is the belief that second language learning is all about teaching grammar skills and vocabulary explicitly. Its known that these skills are better developed when they are context embedded. Then the author mentions something about a "structured" Natural Approach. An oxymoron if I ever heard one! Where's the content?

Good book for cooperative learning.

I like this, I teach ELL and I wanted some new cooperative learning structures I could use. I liked the book, but if you are familiar with Kagan a lot of the structures presented you will already know. I was hoping for some new ideas. It is a good book though and it is well laid out.

Kind of thin

There are some good activities in the book, but it certainly doesn't live up to the glowing "Foreward" that Spencer Kagan wrote for it. Many of the ideas are found in other teacher resource books, so they are hardly unique to Kagan. Note that the book is only 134 pages, and many of those pages are black line masters of things like articles of clothing, which are readily available elsewhere. I purchased a used copy, but I don't think it's worth the 29.00 price for a new copy.

Everything in the book is plain common sense. May be helpfull for people who are single and are considering marriage. Help those who haven't thought about the finance part of their relationsip. But established couples should have figured everything in the book already.

A must read for couples!

This book provides excellent financial advice for couples, tackling issues every committed relationship will face- whether or not to get a prenuptial agreement, the pros and cons of having joint vs. separate accounts, legal, financial and emotional considerations around changing vs. not changing one's name, essential financial preparedness before starting a family, and what to do when illness or death strikes, to name a few. This book is well-written, insightful and humorous. The authors' candidly share some of their own trials and triumphs as a couple around money, which is refreshing and real. In addition to nuts-and-bolts financial information the authors give great suggestions on discussions you need to have with your partner around money and how to go about having them.

Interesting but US-centric

It is an interesting tome though I must confess that I read it after I walked the aisle, and after we bought our diamonds! Since it is US-centric in its information and guidelines, I would say to couples like us - in Europe - this provides a very handy thought structuring input provider. The guidelines are broad and with a little research one can use it for one's specific country context. The tone is friendly and the subject knowledge of the authors comes through as well as their effort to make it idiot-friendly (no offence to anyone!). I would recommend it and my husband is next in line to read my copy.

When i first heard about this book,i was only mildly and atrabiliously interested in this latest horoscope book on the topic of 'personality-divination'.I didn't know what to think about it.I thought that it was just some kind of a door-stop for soothsayers. I saturninly investigated whether it was nonsense or something profound.This forecasting birthday book is amazingly accurate indeed! I was impressed by the foretelling essense of what one could expect for one's birthday.For the astrological based predictions,this book is metaphysically of high eminence.The tarot,numerology,color-codes and wiccan postulations are quite rational and persuadable.I analyzed all the days within the book,and was awestruck by the revelations for anyone's date of birth.This is not trite 'Horoscopus-Pocus'!I think this book was established and based upon the evidence ,of many other past authors, through the years gone-by.In the years to follow,this book will gain in popularity,i would attest to this.Simply because it will be proven orthodoxically correct for astrology scholars on dates of birth and their personality associations.I can't think of another birthday-divination tome around ,that could match this one yet.

This book was inspirational from the very moment I picked it up and turned to my Birthdate of November 18th, it described me perfectly, even nailing my choice of careers perfectly, and even knew about the fact that I am an inspiring writer as well, how refreshing to pick up a book and it tell you so much about yourself that you knew, but just wanted someone else to reaffirm for you. Perfect fit in my case! It nailed my wife's birthday as well. We plan on taking it with us to our family get togethers during Christmas and New Year's to see how accurate it is for our other family members. This book is highly recommended to all, although I recommend buying it at Barnes and Nobles, where you can get it for 20 bucks brandnew, instead of the 33 dollars that Amazon will charge you.

Engaging and sexy read!

I haven't got around to reading all the stories in this anthology but the story I read by Ann Greche - 'A Christmas Wish Come True' is fantastic. Ann manages to successfully weave emotion with hot sex scenes the whole way through. Every part of the story, from one event to the next was seemless, engaging. I love the bond between both Declan and Ollie, and how they'd both loved each other as more than stepbrothers but neither knew it for so many years. And the opening scenes were fantastic! Well actually all the scenes were. I also love the inner struggle we see in Declan about being a gay man and his fears due to the stigma attached about being gay and his worry that he wouldn't be accepted by those he loved. We could really feel his angst, understand his emotional struggles. Ann gets into the psyche of not only a male but a gay male really well in my opinion and the way she describes Declan's thoughts and actions to me is really believable.

I also loved how the story had equal amounts of love mixed with lustful sex. It was very effective and added to the appeal of the story.

There was a bit of everything in this story - emotion, hot sex scenes, great imagery, good insight, engaging storyline and relatable, believable and loveable characters. I wanted more of Declan and Ollie and can't wait to read Ann's next book!

I was given this book in return for my honest review.

I have previously read and reviewed two of Katherine May's other books and was delighted when I was given this ARC.

Ariana Gilbert is your typical "Ugly Duckling". She was a complete and total nerd in high school, with bad hair, no chest and lets not get started on her clothes but what a difference a few years can do. After graduating from law school and deciding that the family business was not where she saw herself, Ari soon lands a job working for her high school crush, Jude Shepard. But with his horrible attitude and his blatant ignorance to who she is, Ari decides that her main mission is to help Mr. Shepard loosen up. But how? With his horrible attitude and his disdain for the upcoming holidays, what can she do to make him happy?

Jude Shepard had everything in high school, good looks, the pretty high school girlfriend, popular friends but what he didn't have was the love from his father. Yes his grandfather left him the family business when he died but the last person Jude wanted to become was someone like his horrible father. However with the mounting pressure of running a multi million dollar oil business, Jude is loosing his battle. That is until his 11th secretary/personal assistant walks in the door. He is captivated by her looks and can't seem to get her off his mind. But with a upcoming trip to Miami, will Jude be able to keep his distance?

This is a quick read that will leave you smiling at the end. My only complaint is that it ended to quickly, I wanted to hear more about Jude and Ari. I wanted Jude to Woo her but I understand that with a box set the author had to keep the story short and sweet.

Way to got Ms. May! TOTAL 5 "SWEET" STAR READ!!!!!!

tender yet spicy fantasy you don't want to miss

What do you do when a loving but broken-hearted mother has lost her love for Christmas? You set her up with a love so true, so intense, and so resolute that even her anger and distrust can’t deter. Cute. Fun. Silly. I enjoyed it.

Jack is a cop currently on leave. He kind of loses his mind and does stupid things when he’s around Davina. He makes inaccurate assumptions and it’s funny.

I often times don’t like inaccurate assumptions because they are not done well ( example: i.e. a character says something they don’t mean and the other is offended or hurt. A normal conversation would clear the air but that doesn’t happen.)

But in this story the inaccurate assumptions were believable, and I enjoyed the silly conflict. Example: Jack knows Davina is hiding something from him in her house. When Jack sees Davina using a large amount of light in the basement, he assumes she is growing marijuana. She was not, but that was a reasonable “inaccurate assumption” especially since he dealt with drug dealers as a cop.

The book was formerly titled “The Davina Code.”

Witty and intriguing read

If you love humour in your books, then you've found the right author. Janet Elizabeth Henderson knows how to write quirky characters and put the in tight spots, making for interesting and funny stories.
Davina is one crazy lady, with a plan to make herself famous.
Jack is a down and out ex cop who inherits a house, and Davina. Life just gets complicated from there. Every twist and turn Davina blocks Jacks attempts to find out what she's doing and Jack tries every trick in his ex police books to find out what she's hiding.
Loved Davina, or crazy Davy as Jack called her. Confused, insane, outta this world don't quite capture her uniqueness.
Get this book. You won't be disappointed.

Hilarious

Damian wants to make a movie. The only poo problem is she's trying to make the movie at her home on stolen movie equipment or miss appropriate equipment, as Davina plans on returning it once she's done. The equipment is the least of her problems. Jack Miller shows up and tells her he's the new owner of the house and wants to inspect the inside. Damian doesn't want him in the house until she's done with her movie and has a change to return the movie equipment. This sets off crazy time as the two try everything in their power to keep each other from their goal.

Vivian Broughton is a psychotherapist of some 25 years experience who has studied with Professor Ruppert since 2005. She now works only with theories of trauma and the methodology of the constellation as the means of resolving trauma. She works in the UK and many other countries.
