Keith Cuthbertson is Professor of Finance at CASS Business School, City University, London. He has been an advisor to the Bank of England and UK Treasury and a visitor at the Federal Reserve, Washington DC and Bundesbank Professor at the Freie University, Berlin. He has held chairs at the University of Newcastle and Tanaka Business School, Imperial College, as well as undertaking consultancy with financial institutions.

Excellent introduction to empricial finance

This is fast becoming one of my favorite books, simply because it packs so much into one volume (where I previously had to turn to three). "Quantitative Financial Economics" rivals Bodie, Kane and Marcus, and Elton and Gruber in scope and quality.

It almost goes without saying, but this book is much better than anything by Frank Fabozzi.

No one book can contain everything, but lord knows Cuthbertson and Nitzche try. Here is a quick list of chapters: Basic Concepts in Finance; Basit Statistics; Efficient Market Hypothesis; Are Stock Returns Predictable?; Mean-Variance Portfolio Theory and the CAPM; International Portfoli Diversification; Performance Measures, CAPM and APT; Emperical Evidence: CAPM and APT; Applications of Linear Factor Models; Valuation Models and Asset Returns; Stock Pricve Volatility; Stock Prices: the VAR Approach; SDF Model and the C-CAPM; C-CAPM: Evidence and Extensions; Intertemporal Asset Allocation: Theory; Intertemporal Asset Allocation: Emperics; Rational Bubbles and Learning; Behavioral Finance and Anomalies; Behaviorla Models; Theories of the Term Structure; The EH-From Theory to Testing; Empirical Evidenceon the Term Stucture; SDF and Affine Term Structure Models; The Foreign Exchange market; Testing CIP, UIP, and FRU; Modeling the FX Risk Premium; Exchange Rate Fundamentals; Market Risk; Volatitlity and market Microstructure.

Whew!

If I had to recommend a single book to someone who had the energy and discipline to teach themselves the basics of modern finance, this would be the book I'd recommend. I'd also recommend this as an excellent "one stop shopping" refresher for PhD in Finance candidates who are about to take comprehensive exams, for this work serves as a very strong and efficient outline of the most important topics in empirical and academic finance.

Weaknesses are few, but I will say that the chapters of foreign exchange have a "tacked on" quality to them that does not compare to the strengths of the other chapters on CAPM and EMH.

An additional strength is that Cuthbertson and Nieztche are United Kingdom-based authors, and so the tone throughout is one of conscious international focus and attention. Bodie Kane and Marcus and Elton and Gruber often allude to an implicitly US biased market tone, which, as global capital efficiency increases, is becoming a liability.

This is an excellent, highly recommended work for an introductory text, a support text for intermediate studies with a particular focus, or for support and review for advanced students. Cuthbertson and Nietzche have every reason to be proud, and "Quantitative Financial Economics" should be used by undergraduate and graduate programs, and widely available in reference libraries.

Excellent Introduction to Financial Economics

An excellent book to start understanding quantitaive methods in financial economics. This could serve as one of the best introductions to the first-timers. The author has taken care to explain the concepts in a lucid manner to prepare the student to take on the concepts at a greater detail. He even touches upon complex issues like stock market 'anomalies' and models of noise trader behaviour. The discussion on 'rational bubble'is also quite helpful. On the whole, a very good text to understand competing theoritical models in financial economics and their applicability in various markets like stock, bond and currency market.

The story was very hot! The plot developed fairly quickly and the book was too short in my opinion. Just as I was whetting my appetite the book ended, bummer. I could taste Brad and wanted so much more, the book kinda felt like a hot little quickie. Overall nice read but way too short.

Indispensable --the mission commander's own account

A History Channel interviewer asked Jim Lovell if the movie represented what really happened. Lovell politely answered in the affirmative, but this story of his is quite different. It also includes a protracted, horrible account of The Fire that was later named "Apollo 1" in deference to the deceased, his other lunar mission (Apollo 8), and more, with details not mentioned even in Andrew Chaikin's excellent tome A Man on the Moon. I found the book well-balanced in terms of how much technical detail to include. It is a good read.

While consulting for NASA I found an obscure little book written by an engineer that told more details of the mishap than the movie did (of course), but even his explanation of oxygen tank #2's explosion was not as complete as the one in the epilogue of this book. This is the most satisfactory and complete explanation I've seen. It made me realize that it was only a fluke that the explosion occurred when it did (there had already been two previous cryo-stirs in the flight); Lovell and Haise could have easily been stranded on the moon with Sweigart orbiting for eternity in his ghost ship. Lovell openly recounts his chance to have the O2 tank swapped out for a new one.

If I were to pick nits, I would pick only two: (1) although Jeff Kluger is a competent writer with the gift for finding the right word, he sometimes drops in an incongruous big word (like "brobdingnagian" --sheesh), and (2) instead of a photo of the Apollo 13 crew, the cover bears the countenance of the miscast actor who played Lovell in the movie. He's a good actor, but Jim Lovell he ain't; I suspect that's why Lovell said in the interview that it is hard to watch oneself being portrayed by an actor.

I like this book!

I read this book some years back under the original title of "Lost Moon". I'm a nerd at heart, but I liked the book so much I just bought it for my husband. I'm reading it again--when he's not.

It's the book that the movie "Apollo 13" was based on, co-authored by astronaut Jim Lovell. Maybe the topic is not for everyone, but I found it very interesting and entertaining. It's not the average beach reading!
For those old enough to remember, we probably raced too fast to get to the moon in the 60's, but fortunately it worked. Tragically, a few lives were lost, but it's almost a miracle that we made it to the moon in 1969 without much greater losses. This was a time when astronauts could and did read scripture from space and no one objected, and the world prayed for the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew. Such a fantastic time in our history.

If you enjoy things like visiting Kennedy Space Center even a little bit, you'll probably like this book. It goes much further than the movie, of course. It's hard for me to put down.

I also like Michael Collins' book about the early space program. These stories are so much more interesting than most fiction.

Fantastic Book, Incredible Odds overcame

Bought this as a second copy so I don't ruin my signed hard cover. This is a great book and gives a bunch of extra detail that the movie lacks. With that said, this does not read like a novel, just a forewarning.

A friend gave me both of these products - the Clinical Certified Transplant Nurse Exam Flashcards along with the CCTN Exam Secrets. I have used them both together and as I wrote on my review for the Exam Secrets, I ended up scoring in the highest percentile in my class. Very proud of that. I have a hard time with test anxiety, and felt that reduced after using the information given in these products. I felt well prepared for the test after using the flashcards for a couple of weeks, and probably could have prepared in far less time, if I had set aside a day or two for review, since the information was still so fresh in my mind. Having test anxiety though I'm a little ocd about being sure I'm prepared and have done everything ahead of time. For this reason I also doubly appreciate that they recommend a spaced out repetition for review. The material on the flashcards follows suite with the Practice Test Questions in the Exam Secrets book. The topics follow the same subject titles in the table of contents in the Exam Secrets book so that if you use them together, everything is very clear and easy to follow. Also, the information on the flashcards is thorough - in case the questions on the exam require more information, you're not getting one or two word answers on the flashcards. The answers on the flashcards provide plenty of information to draw from once you're answering actual exam questions. Very satisfied. Thanks again!

Flash cards for transplant nurses

Flash cards are a great way to study. They can be taken anywhere and studied any time. They also break up information so you can study a little at a time. It’s hard to believe that there are flash cards out there for transplant nurses to use for this exact test, but that’s exactly what this product is. These flash cards have all of the information on them that you need to know for this exact test. And even better yet, they don’t cost very much! These cards are easy to take around and they help you learn things in question form so you will be used to the way the material looks when you are sitting down and taking the test on the big day. The flash cards also help you study on the go and on your feet, which will prepare you to be a transplant nurse even further. As a transplant nurse, you’ll have to know the information when you need to know it. You may not be able to look things up. Studying here and there is a great way to practice for that type of experience. There are a lot of ways you could prepare for this test, but using these flash cards will give you advantages you could really use.

Carmen Acevedo Butcher has spent the last twenty years studying and teaching medieval Christianity. She earned her Ph.D. in medieval studies from the University of Georgia, and teaches at Shorter University. Good company and all that

I love everything about Hildegard von Bingen. She was a mystic, a writer, an herbalist, a dietitian, an illustrator, a playwright, a composer, a musician, a performer, and by the way as an Abbess, she successfully ran a Benedictine convent (and built a second convent). It is AMAZING to me that her 12th-century "superiors" in the Church accepted the theological soundness of her visions, and let her get away with (and BE) all that, ESPECIALLY permitting her to go on a preaching tour(!!) in her sixties no less (in spite of Paul's admonition that "women should keep silent in church")!

So this book is a gift, most especially Dr. Butcher's eloquent and multi-leveled translations of Hildegard's songs, plays, letters and mystical writings. Dr. Butcher obvioulsy loves and admires Hildegard as much as I do! I plan to reread this book often, recommend it to other fans of Hildegard, and mark it up even more.

One of Pope Benedict's last actions before he bailed was to canonize Hildegard and to declare her a Doctor of the Church, which places her in company with Teresa of Avila, Catherine of Siena, John of the Cross, Terese of Liseaux, Thomas Aquinas and Augustine, among others.

Writings of a medieval woman mystic

St. Hildegard of Bingen, declared a Doctor of the Church not long ago by Pope Benedict XVI, was a medieval German abbess and renaissance woman whose writings range from science and music to theatrical productions and mystical theology. This paperback volume, translated into modern English by Carmen Acevedo Butcher, offers a satisfying range of selections from Hildegard's opus. Particularly fascinating is the "Play of the Virtues," a medieval theater piece that Hildegard wrote for her cloistered Benedictine nuns to perform. Hildegard is an impressive religious and historical figure who is going through a bit of a renaissance right now (even getting a German movie, "Vision," which attempts to tell her story without quite capturing it) as a Catholic proto-feminist. Her writings are significant and edifying to read.

In this the life of St. Hildegard, Carmen helps us get into the songs, theology, and letters of this amazing woman. Finally, we get a chronology of her life at the end of the book with an excellent appendix on further revised spiritual reader on St. Hildegard of Bingen, Carmen Burcher (Professor of Medieval Studies) examines the life of this poet, mystic, artist, preacher, and composer. After a 21 page chapter on reading for those interested in future study. Overall, I think the book was very well organized and brought out the immense creativity of St. Hildegard while displaying the cultural situation in which she lived.

Carmen brings out the real emotion of St. Hildegard that she constantly battled with. Writing about the Scivias, Hildegard’s visionary work, Carmen writes, “But Hildegard did not begin immediately. She hesitated, doubting her ability to serve as God’s prophet. Medieval society judged women unworthy to write. Writing was manly….Finally she began a ten-year writing effort that would bring her much contemporary recognition.” (10) Eventually, Pope Eugenius would laud praise upon the work of Hildegard. She met with much opposition in founding her first abbey, but this didn’t stop Hildegard from advancing her desire to serve. She wrote music and even a work on herbal medicine. Although she was met with opposition at every point, Hildegard was tenacious about leaving her mark in service to God.

The visions in her Scivias range from apocalyptic visions to denouncements upon the weakness of the church. We even find an early apology for the changing of the elements in the Eucharist. “When the priest humbly speaks the genuine words of salvation over the Eucharist, its elements are metamorphosed into the body and blood of our Savior….In the Eucharistic offering, the bread and wine undergo a transformation – into My Son’s body and blood,” writes Hildegard (63). Much like a butterfly climbs out of a cocoon, the transformation of the elements occurs through metamorphosis. It is interesting to see how Hildegard understands the Eucharist by taking what is in nature and applying it to the sacred. There is virtually no area of study in which Hildegard didn’t want to leave footprint. She was a whirl of energy in the body of follower.

This was a fascinating book indeed, one that makes you wonder how such a woman could be so creative in a world with so much opposition strewn her way.
