Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven: A Graphic Novel by Duncan Long, by Duncan Long

This new graphic novel, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” offers a dizzying tale of madness: A demon lover (back from the grave to exact her revenge), the surreal imaginings of an insane narrator, and the secret behind the death of a beautiful young woman. Lavishly illustrated with gorgeous, highly detailed paintings, the artwork weaves a haunting tapestry of terror. Coupled with Poe’s prose, the reader is treated to a roller-coaster ride racing from atmospheric dread to heart-pounding violence with the turn of a page. Dispensing with the crude lettering of most graphic novels, this version of “The Raven” employs a typeface in keeping with the mood and period of Poe’s original story. Coupled with the beautiful layout and illustrations on each page, this book provides a feast for the eyes as well as remaining easy to read. Odd visual twists give new insights and slants to the story, presenting a dark, Gothic tale of gloom, decay, and revenge that’s a must read for fans of Edgar Allan Poe. About the artist: Duncan Long has been illustrating books and magazines for more than three decades, creating over a thousand illustrations for HarperCollins, PS Publishing, Pocket Books, Amazing Stories, Paladin Press, Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, Lyons Press, and many small presses and self-publishing authors.

A Moody, Artistic and Provacative Grpahic Novel on Poe's Classic
By Anthony Pacheco
I loved this graphic novel and used it in my homeschool curriculum with my kids to introduce them to Poe. The artwork was, as always from Duncan Long when he takes on dark subjects, top notch: moody, artistic and provocative. Highly Recommend for Poe fans and makes a great coffee table book for proper conversation when guests come over. Heh.

The Story of Film, by Mark Cousins

Anew edition of the most accessible and compelling history of the medium published, with an updated foreword by the author to accompany his 15-hour feature documentaryFilm critic, producer, and presenter Mark Cousins' historyshows how filmmakers are influenced both by the historical events of their times, and by each other. He demonstrates, for example, how Douglas Sirk's 1950s Hollywood melodramas influenced Rainer Werner Fassbinder's despairing visions of 1970s Germany and how George Lucas' Star Wars epics grew out of Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. The Story of Film is divided into three main epochs: silent (1885–1928), sound (1928–1990), and digital (1990-present), and within this structure films are discussed in chapters reflecting both the stylistic concerns of the filmmakers and the political and social themes of the time. As well ascovering the great American films and filmmakers, the book explores cinema in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and South America, and shows how cinematic ideas and techniques cross national boundaries. Avoiding jargon and obscure critical theory, the author constantly places himself in the role of the moviegoer watching a film, asking How does a scene or a story affect us, and why? Indoing so,he gets to the heart of cinematic technique, explaining how filmmakers use lighting, framing, focal length, and editing to create their effects. Clearly written, and illustrated withmore than400 stills, this bookis essential reading for both film students and the general moviegoer.

Good Book, Cheezy Cover
By Harlem Brother
I was looking for a good, current history of world film and ran across this one in the bookstore. The cartoony cover and the Jack Sparrow image made me immediately doubt whether this would be the serious overview I was looking for so I bought this in tandem with the "Oxford History of World Cinema" which takes rather a more academic and in-depth approach to film than this one.
I've been reading this book with pleasure over the last two weeks and can say it has brought a lot of aspects of film watching and appreciation to my attention. The author's style is engaging, weaving fluently through different directors, nations and genres. The focus is on more artistic, groundbreaking and influential works, taking the auteur approach - focusing more on the directors than actors or other facets of cinema. That's probably what I like most about this book, that it's a celebration of great artists, treated with great care and enthusiasm. The author's love of cinema and his passion for the art is evident throughout.
I'd say the average reader ought to have a decent viewing history to fully appreciate the book, say, at least the knowledge of some films from the likes of Pasolini, Bergman, Dreyer, Wilder, Ozu, etc. to fully appreciate the book, although no one genre, film or director is taken too in depth as it goes for a wider scope. The text is augmented by beautiful stills, much of it to highlight visual and technical changes throughout cinematic history. The physical quality of the book is great, with glossy pages and photos (If it weren't for that horrid cover art!)
On the not-so-positive side I was surprised to see Cassavettes barely mentioned and Peter Watkins' total omission from the book (which would support Watkins' and others' claim that he is the most marginalized director of the latter half of the twentieth century). There are many who consider Watkins the most important British director of his generation. How can the author slight such artists in a serious historical survey? The other complaint I have are the atrocious number of spelling errors of a very basic variety. It bcomes slitely anoyying aftar a wile.
If you're looking for a more technical, in depth or academic approach, then I'd suggest "Oxford History of World Cinema", but I think you'll find "The Story of Film" a more accessible and enjoyable read.

Cheesy Cover Art (which almost certainly wasn't the author's idea): 1/2 star

Emphasis on Style and Innovation in World Cinema
By Amazon Customer
Mark Cousins' impressive overview of the last 100+ years in world cinema is both engaging and meticulously researched. Unlike the frustrating collective anthology "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", "Story" is very much a personal project; as Cousins writes, his goal is to "open a door to the world of cinema and describe *a* reliable path through it" (emphasis mine). He's quick to point out that many beloved films and directors are missing from the text, and it seems pointless to try to quibble with his selections -- indeed, omissions seem inevitable in such a massive undertaking.

With that said, the book is not an entirely successful venture, primarily due to Cousins' frequent references to technological and stylistic innovations which the average reader (even the "intelligent general audience" member he appeals to) will find obscure, and which the more informed reader may quibble with. On page 482, for instance, he references "the unflattering honesty with which [Nan Goldin] films people and her habit of non colour-correcting sodium lighting" -- the majority of readers will have no idea what "sodium lighting" refers to, while photography buffs will argue that the available natural lighting Goldin relies on is likely tungsten, not sodium. Similarly, on pages 250-251, Cousins mentions that the lens used to film several sequences in Bresson's "Pickpocket" was "50 mm, which approximates human vision"; this estimation is only accurate for 35 mm still photography, but, more importantly, his point will likely be lost altogether on most readers. Ironically, I believe Cousins' explanations would benefit from *less* detail and more strategic scaffolding of the basic ideas he'd like to get across to interested readers.

Keeping in mind once again that Cousins very clearly stipulates that he's taking a "certain path" through world cinema, readers should note that many of the selections in his book will not necessarily be enjoyable to the average (again, even the average "intelligent") cinephile. Cousins' appreciation is more that of an art historian than a moviegoer. With that said, it's undeniably refreshing to see the more obscure gems of "third world" cinema given their due, even if most viewers will never find copies to rent.

In sum, this meticulously crafted book (albeit one full of typos, which should be addressed before a second printing) will excite and inspire most readers to watch -- and re-watch -- literally hundreds of diverse films. Years after taking my first film appreciation course in college, I've been reminded about the meta-narrative of movies over the ages, about how cinema often reflects diverse sociological concerns, and about how directors tend to build upon (or diverge from) their predecessors. It's an exciting story, and Cousins is a worthy, dedicated storyteller.

Brilliant alternative opinionated history of film
By Historied
The remarkable thing about this book is just how many must see movies it added to my list. It's coverage is genuinely global and covers the entire history of film world wide. I am not so sure about how well it fits film into the national histories of the countries concerned but any weakness in this area is more than made up with its focus on technique, scene analysis and simply throwing new light on familiar and unfamiliar films. An eye opener and it also has a good bibliography to assist further study. The related DVD documentary by Mark Cousins seems equally interesting from the four episodes I have so far seen.

A good overview of PostgreSQL, especially for those who are familiar with databases
By Geordee Naliyath
This book gives a good overview of PostgreSQL database. It is an easy read, especially so if you have some background in any other databases. The book is logically organized from the installation steps to advanced topics. Even the process of installation is explained pretty nicely, explaining the internals of the database systems - which is pretty rare in similar books.

In the past I have built quite a number of products with PostgreSQL as the backend. I could work with PostgreSQL easily with the general overview and DBMS concepts from other databases. The chapters on server architecture and object hierarchies really helped me to understand PostgreSQL in depth, especially in relation to other databases. As I mentioned earlier, and as the title implies, if you have been a database programmer, administrator or an architect, the details are presented concisely, in a logical order. I should also mention the handy queries and commands in every section, that prompts me to leave the eBook on the desktop.

Next two chapters focus on the transactions, data modeling, and client tools which are more beginner-friendly. However, it helps to understand how PostgreSQL implements or supports those features. The book then takes a steep climb to more serious topics such as tuning, administration and scaling.

SQL Tuning is quite enjoyable, starting with a few thought-provoking facts and strategies. Each of the tuning tips is well-demonstrated. A better (and consistent) layout would have made it a little more easier to read. The chapter on server tuning is also quite easy to read, especially if you have some similar background from any of the databases.

Scaling, Replication, and Backup and Recovery is one of the longest, and toughest chapters. Overlapping concepts from all four topics are distilled here, and it would take some effort from the reader to keep everything in mind, together. A lot of details present here would require additional reading to get a fair understanding and grip on the subject. The book serves the purpose of keeping the concepts together as an overview.

PostgreSQL is one database that competes well against the NoSQL data stores. The last chapter gives a glimpse of PostgreSQL’s not-so-conventional capabilities. The books covers PostgreSQL 9.3. Hope that it would be revised with 9.4 or even 9.5 in future, with more details on the newer features available to data architects.

Overall a good read, and a book worth keeping.

This book is dedicated to one of the popular and powerful development tools from Cypress Semiconductors, CY8CKIT-059 PSoC 5LP Prototyping Kit, which allows to greatly simplify design of electronic circuitry.
This kit includes CY8C5888LTI-LP097 device from the PSoC 5LP family which is the industry’s most integrated programmable SoC, combining high-precision and programmable analog and digital peripherals with an ARM Cortex-M3 CPU in a single chip. Developers and hobbyists can build complicated embedded systems using the Programmable Analog Blocks including op-amps, PGAs, filters, comparators, SAR and Delta-Sigma analog-to-digital converters. Combined with the free PSoC Creator 3.3 IDE, the PSoC 5LP Prototyping Kit enables developers to create unique designs powered by the PSoC 5LP Programmable System-on-Chip.
This book is thought as a highly practical guide which can help a developer to build various electronic circuits, measurement and control systems. Each project allows to understand various theoretical and practical aspects of design using PSoC 5LP. The material of the book assumes that the readers are familiar, at least, with basics of designing and assembling electronic circuits. For most projects having some basic skills in electronics will serve the readers well and allow them to understand what is going on behind the scenes. Each project is accompanied by a detailed description of hardware and software which helps to make things clear.

On a Steel Horse I Ride: A History of the MH-53 Pave Low Helicopters in War and Peace, by Air University Press

Pave Low. The term itself generates an image: a dark, wispy night; a low, pulsating rumble approaching from the distance. The rumble becomes a presence, a large helicopter that settles onto the ground amidst the deep darkness. Earnest men of determination spew forth from it. Heavily armed, they quickly set up to collect intelligence, kill enemy troops, rescue downed or isolated friendly personnel, or otherwise conduct a direct action mission. Mission complete, they just as quickly reassemble, reboard the aircraft, and then disappear into the consuming darkness. It is a powerful image—a conjure, if you will—that strikes fear into any enemy of the United States. But the conjure is real. It is a helicopter called the MH-53J/M. That machine is the end result of the evolution of state-of-the-art avionics, communication, and navigation equipment crewed by highly motivated, enthusiastic, and smart young operators well steeped in the principles, heritage, and credo of special operations. It is the classic combination of men and machine. Those aircraft and Airmen were assigned to the US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), “America’s specialized airpower . . . a step ahead in a changing world, delivering special operations power anytime, anywhere.”1 AFSOC controls a mixed fleet of both rotaryand fixed-wing aircraft to facilitate the fulfillment of that mission. However, the single aircraft that, in its day, has best epitomized that role is the Pave Low helicopter. It, perhaps more than any other aircraft, allowed the AFSOC to realize its purpose. But it was not always so. The aircraft themselves were revolutionary combinations of new, more powerful turbine engines with rotarywing aircraft to produce vastly increased lifting power. Conceptualized, built, and designated for simpler missions, they were immediately swept up into the long war in Southeast Asia. There they proved the efficacy of the aircraft for dangerous rescue missions, for the initiation of a whole new generation of developing avionics and navigation technology, for providing challenging direct support to small special forces teams and indigenous forces inserted behind enemy lines, and for a myriad of other things that heavy-lift helicopters could be assigned to do. In accomplishing all of that, they also trained a whole generation of men who learned of combat along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and at other places like Quang Tri, South Vietnam; Son Tay, North Vietnam; and Koh Tang Island, Cambodia. After that conflict, those aircraft and men were returned to peacetime locations and duties, and much was forgotten of those dangerous times and missions. However, a cadre of dedicated combat aviators and commanders felt that the aircraft and community of Airmen had much more to give. Foreseeing an ever-dangerous world, they harnessed those aircraft to a series of evolving new technologies that vastly improved the aircraft by giving them the ability to traverse airspace in any weather conditions, day and night, and to avoid enemy threats. That concept was validated in operations in Panama, Kuwait, Iraq, Serbia, Afghanistan, and many more smaller and quieter operations in between. The men and aircraft also showed the larger utilitarian value of the aircraft as, over the years, they were called out many times to provide natural disaster and humanitarian relief from Africa to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Something missing
By simon
I bought this book because I worked on these helicopters in the Air Force during the 1980's. I guess I wanted to revisit history a little. Unfortunately, this book was something of a disappointment. The text of the book seems accurate and quite long and detailed, however, there are a few things missing. I suspect the publisher shipped these books before they proofed them. There is no copy write page. The table of contents lists dozens of figures and photos. There are only 5 photos in the entire book, but there are dozens of empty spaces where the figures and photos would presumably go. There are also no page numbers in the entire book, but the page numbers are used in the table of contents. There is also nothing printed on the spine or on the back cover. I will try to return this copy and perhaps get one that is actually complete as I would very much like to view the book in its entirety. Maybe then I can give it a better review.
Update: I returned the book and within 3 days received a replacement. Unfortunately, the replacement is identical to the first one. No page numbers, most photos missing & no copy write page. Apparently, Amazon doesn't read the reason you returned an item before they ship you a new one. I will return this one for a refund. Don't buy this book.

Review
“Cashdan goes a long way to clarify a potentially confusing and complex therapeutic process. The volume should be an impetus to others in the field to explore their own approach to clients and to reevaluate the process of their therapeutic work.” (Contemporary Psychology)

“A good starting place for therapists interested in a brief overview of object relations therapy, this book gives the reader, neophyte or experienced therapist, a nice theoretical framework. Basic, clear, and humane, it sparkles with interventions both poignant and powerful.” (American Journal of Psychiatry)

Surprised by client treatment and the extremity of his views
By anonymous
While Object Relations Therapy was highly readable, even entertaining, I was deeply concerned with some of the author's more extreme client interventions, and would urge readers to consider this. I felt this most notably with regard to the treatment of an incest survivor on p. 141. Not only is the woman called a name that's unprintable through Amazon, but when people attempt to comfort her, the author/therapist "pries their fingers" from his client. He also fails to intervene with clients drinking alcohol in the office, and who, as a consequence wreck a car, potentially causing himself and others great harm. For another client, invervention isn't made until after a suicide attempt, although it could have been, (p. 124). While I understand we're to assume prelinguistic problems with these clients, the reality is that the case studies refer to trauma clients (the suicide was ten when her mother, also in the house, killed herself). I also understand that Cashdan's trying to propose a therapy similar to what we might have once called "tough love." However, the extremes here seem horrifying and dangerous to me, and do, by his own admission, nearly result in repeated client deaths. I certainly don't want to destroy the read (I bought and read it), I just urge all readers to consider the real effect of such practices on clients. Books like this should be read to raise awareness of such practices. Some of the clients presented here would be able to pursue litigation justifiably, and therapists, especially those just beginning their practices, should be made aware of this. To invoke more rational object relations players, such as Kernberg and Klein, just didn't seem apt. I suspect this book will create quite a controversy.

A GREAT REVIEW OF A THEORY THAT REMAINS THE BEST EVEN IF..
By Dr. Barb
as a very young Clinician, object relations theory simply made sense to me. I had a great foundation in Child Development, and I was also in intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy; Both contributed to my ability to take to this great model, and if we perhaps call looking at our interactions and relationships, both in the session and in the everyday lives of our patients by other names, well, it still is ORT to me! I have read some of the best in this model, and I feel this fairly affordable overview is great. Please let us, after many decades in this field, not get distracted by new words, such as Mindfulness. I think we have had to be Mindful for a long time! If the relabeled wording is true scientific advancement, I doubt it! But this Theory is as complementary to all the newly worded approaches; It always will be, because it is so basic to Human Functioning, and the knowledge is crucial for proper diagnosis, so let's keep passing it on to our grad students and residents! This book is a great Primer, and I plan to keep using it, and Object Relations Theory is timeless, indeed.

Seventeen years ago, Sepha Stephanos fled the Ethiopian Revolution for a new start in the United States. Now he finds himself running a failing grocery store in a poor African-American section of Washington, D.C., his only companions two fellow African immigrants who share his bitter nostalgia and longing for his home continent. Years ago and worlds away Sepha could never have imagined a life of such isolation. As his environment begins to change, hope comes in the form of a friendship with new neighbors Judith and Naomi, a white woman and her biracial daughter. But when a series of racial incidents disturbs the community, Sepha may lose everything all over again.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Barely suppressed despair and black wit infuse this beautifully observed debut from Ethiopian migr Mengestu. Set over eight months in a gentrifying Washington, D.C., neighborhood in the 1970s, it captures an uptick in Ethiopian grocery store owner Sepha Stephanos's long-deferred hopes, as Judith, a white academic, fixes up the four-story house next to his apartment building, treats him to dinner and lets him steal a kiss. Just as unexpected is Sepha's friendship with Judith's biracial 11-year-old daughter, Naomi (one of the book's most vivid characters), over a copy of The Brothers Karamazov. Mengestu adds chiaroscuro with the story of Stephanos's 17-year exile from his family and country following his father's murder by revolutionary soldiers. After long days in the dusty, barely profitable shop, Sepha's two friends, Joseph from Congo and Kenneth from Kenya, joke with Sepha about African dictators and gently mock his romantic aspirations, while the neighborhood's loaded racial politics hang over Sepha and Judith's burgeoning relationship like a sword of Damocles. The novel's dirge-like tone may put off readers looking for the next Kite Runner, but Mengestu's assured prose and haunting set pieces (especially a series of letters from Stephanos's uncle to Jimmy Carter, pleading that he respect "the deep friendship between our two countries") are heart-rending and indelible. From Booklist
In his run-down store in a gentrifying neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Ethiopian immigrant Stepha Stephanos regularly meets with fellow African immigrants Ken the Kenyan and Joe from the Congo. Their favorite game is matching African nations to coups and dictators, as they consider how their new immigrant expectations measure up to the reality of life in America after 17 years. From his store and nearby apartment, Stephanos makes keen observations of American race and class tensions, seeing similarities--physical and social--to his hometown of Addis Ababa, where his father was killed in the throes of revolution. When Judith, a white woman, and Naomi, her mixed-race daughter, move into the neighborhood, Stephanos finds tentative prospects for friendship beyond his African compatriots. Mengestu, himself an Ethiopian immigrant, engages the reader in a deftly drawn portrait of dreams in the face of harsh realities from the perspective of immigrants. Vanessa Bush

Review
Ethiopian escapes genocide, makes new life in Washington

For anyone who's caught the gaze of a foreign-born waiter or cabdriver and wished for a deeper understanding of his half-glimpsed life, reading fiction is one way to crack open the dusty window that often separates us. It's all the more intriguing when the writer is as observant as 29-year-old Dinaw Mengestu, who immigrated to America in 1980, after his family fled Ethiopia's genocidal Red Terror. His haunting and powerful first novel, "The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears," is one of the first to give voice to that experience.

His story centers on 36-year-old Sepha Stephanos, who left his mother and brother in Ethiopia 17 years earlier, after his father was brutalized and escorted to his death by soldiers backing Mengistu Haile Mariam, the Communist dictator who overthrew the senile Haile Selassie.

For the past decade, Stephanos has been quietly reading Dostoyevsky, Dante and Naipaul behind the counter of his convenience store in a run-down Washington, D.C., neighborhood. His evenings are punctuated by visits from Kenneth from Kenya and Joe from Congo that glitter with dark wit. The three, who met years before, when they were valets at a local hotel, now drink shots beneath a 20-year-old map of Africa and play a game that begins when one of them names a dictator; the challenge to the others is to guess the year and country of each coup.

Into this world of suppressed dreams and frustrated memories walks Naomi, an angular 11-year-old know-it-all who, like Stephanos, misses her African father. She starts visiting Stephanos regularly and reads the newspaper with him, stealing his heart as she gravely shakes her head over the failure of American policy in the Middle East and the lack of resources devoted to the global AIDS crisis.

The spark between this spirited girl and cautious man shines through in their dialogue, which is among the sharpest in the book. It also draws Stephanos closer to Naomi's mother, Judith, a single, white professor who stands out because she's renovating one of the grand old houses in this predominantly black neighborhood, and also because her daughter's skin is "lighter than black but darker than white." Soon, Judith and Stephanos begin a hesitant romance, pushing him to consider for the first time what it might feel like to be part of a family again. (The book's title comes from "The Inferno," when Dante emerges from hell and once again lays his eyes on the stars.)

But the same wave of gentrification that brought Judith and Naomi into Stephanos' neighborhood ushers in economic and social pressures threatening his livelihood. Judith's shining four-story mansion also becomes a powerful symbol of the tipping social scale, as longtime black residents are evicted from the area.

We know from the outset that Stephanos' relationship with Judith is doomed, and his resulting downward spiral doesn't always propel the reader along at a fast clip. But what keep the pages turning are Mengestu's tangy and perceptive characterizations and well-crafted set pieces that are alive with personal experience.

Mengestu wrings bravado and pathos out of an episode where Kenneth puts on a suit and rents a car, to make the right impression when he and Stephanos try to buy a used car. After pulling into the dealership "cautiously, as if every minor gesture of ours were being judged," Kenneth decides against going into the main office, instead donning sunglasses and waiting for a salesman to come to him, as he and Stephanos lean coolly against the hood of his car. But the two African immigrants never get more than a "one-eyed glance" from the salesmen and leave 20 minutes later, empty-handed.

Among the most arresting scenes are those involving Stephanos' uncle Berhane Selassie, who is 20 years older than he and once lived on a well-appointed ranch outside Addis Ababa. At least among those in his close-knit apartment building, Selassie has retained the aura of respect that his name commanded in the old regime. Though now working as a cabdriver during the day and parking attendant at night, Selassie sometimes reveals "remnants of the humorous, snobbish young man he had once been." For example, when he comes home grinning inexplicably after his long day's work and Stephanos asks him why, Selassie responds enthusiastically, "Gas is so cheap!," though clearly that's the last reason he came to this country.

When Stephanos gets his own eviction notice and his confidence in his business falters, he returns to the apartment he used to share with his uncle and opens a lockbox in Selassie's closet. Inside are the letters his uncle wrote to U.S. Presidents Carter and Reagan during the Red Terror.

The first letter to Carter -- before his uncle shed his innocence and began writing in the spare, detailed style he found in the Washington Post -- still tugs at Stephanos: "Dear President Carter ... I am one of those people for whom nothing is left of their home country. Everything I have has been taken away from me. For many ages, the United States and Ethiopia have been close allies. There is a deep friendship between our two countries. Therefore, it is imperative that the United States, along with Ethiopia's friends in Europe, come to her aid at this critical juncture in her history." That "friendship" between the United States and Ethiopia, which was solidified when Ethiopia became a founding member of the League of Nations and later the United Nations, has long since been betrayed by the Cold War and oil politics abroad. Yet, as Mengestu closely observes the human face of that betrayal, as it plays out amid the racism and class politics of Washington, D.C., he gives us another chance to understand the Ethiopian American experience, in a deeply felt novel that deserves to be read. -- San Francisco Chronicle, March 11, 2007

Mengestu has told a rich and lyrical story of displacement and loneliness. I was profoundly moved by this tale of Ethiopian immigrant's search for acceptance, peace, and identity. -- Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns

These characters are artfully crafted, original and complex in their humanity. Mengestu wants us to know them, to hear their story, and he succeeds in giving us a novel that is fresh and new. -- Miami Herald

This a great African novel, a great Washington novel, and a great American novel. -- The New York Times Book Review

This first novel, by an Ethiopian-American, sings of the immigrant experience, an old American story that people renew every generation, but it sings in an existential key...His straightforward language and his low-key voice combine to make a compelling narrative, one that loops back in time yet seems to move forward with an even pace. -- Alan Cheuse, Dallas Morning News

This is not a story for only an immigrant audience. The author, Dinaw Mengestu, writes in a way that makes this a universal story. In doing so, he does what the best writers accomplish. -- The Oregonian

[A] tender, enthralling debut novel about the hidden lives of immigrants who are caught between the brutal Africa they have fled and an America that will not full admit them...Mengestu brilliantly illuminates both the trauma of exile and the ways in which so many of us are still looking for home in America. -- Richard McCann, O, The Oprah Magazine

[E]loquent...The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is not a conventional immigrant novel, and Stephanos is not a garden-variety emigre...deeply moving. -- Chicago Tribune

[W]onderfully written and moving. -- Esquire

[W]renching and important...Seldom has a character emerged in a recent novel who is so compellingly dark but honest, hopeful but dismal, and able to turn his chronicle into a truly American tapestry...Mengestu has made, and made well, a novel that is a retelling of the immigrant experience. -- Chris Abani, Los Angeles Times

Beautiful First Novel About an Ethiopian Immigrant
By Joseph Landes
I picked Dinaw Mengestu's first book after being recommended it by my brother who went to the same MFA in Writing program as him at Columbia. I had heard about his newer book How to Read the Air but had not yet read it. I very much enjoyed The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears. It is a beautifully written book that keeps your attention throughout, moves quickly, and is completely enjoyable and a sensitive piece of work. The story is about a younger man named Sepha Stepanos who fled the Ethiopian Revolution many years ago and came to Washington D.C. Like many new immigrants he isn't quite sure what job to do so after living with his uncle for a while and working in a hotel, he opens up a convenience store in a newer and what was supposed to be a soon to be flourishing neighborhood. He meets up with two other African friends from other parts of the continent and they share stories and experiences as they too go through their own trials and tribulations trying to make it in America. Soon, a new family moves into the neighborhood--a single mom Judith and her daughter Naomi. Sepha becomes close with them and particularly the daughter who hangs out at his store after school. Sepha can't quite determine what sort of relationship he should have with Judith but clearly enjoys being a father figure to Naomi. The neighborhood and his store quickly go downhill and Sepha needs to decide how he will react to both. A very good book that I highly recommend.

Interesting perspective
By Diana M. Frank
If you have any interest in the immigration issue this book will give you a different perspective on it. Not everyone comes to the USA simply for opportunity. Many people come because they can no longer live in countries destroyed by wars fought over control of natural resources. For many this is not the land of opportunity. In the current situation it isn't the land of opportunity for Americans. In reading this book and also Stones from the Creek, I see the opportunity to compare the past and present immigrant/worker experiences with an eye toward finding common ground. We know that this isn't the land where the streets are paved with gold. We know that you can work 2 jobs and still not make ends meet. We know that in spite of the fact that there is a black president, racism still exists. Great book. I'm reading another one of his now.

Worthy Debut Novel About the Immigrant Experience
By William Capodanno
Mengestu's debut novel brings to life the American immigrant experience in a touching way. The novel is about an Ethiopian immigrant, Sepha, and his experiences in the Washington DC area over a seven month period in the 1970s. Mengestu captures the hopes and dreams, as well as the struggles and disappointment, of those coming to this country for a better life than in their native land.

Sepha owns a small neighborhood grocey story around Logan Circle, a community underground gentrification. We see his hopes for a more prosperous and successful business grow as work crews start renovating local buildings. Most notably, Sepha decides to start selling sandwiches and buys fresh deli meats and promotes this to what he hopes will be his new clientele.

The two dimensions of this book I found so rewarding are the interplay and relationships of the various characters with Sepha as well as the ups and downs of Sepha's experience representing the broader ebb and flow of immigrant experience.

Judith, a single white academic restores a four story brick neighborhood in the building and moves in with her wiser-than-her years 11 year old Naomi. The depth of Naomi's character was wonderful -- a somewhat sassy, precocious but sweet girl. We see Naomi take to Sepha and a deep bond created between the two of them -- Sepha becomes a father/older brother figure to her. Especially poignant was the joy and fun they had reading of the Brothers Karamazov together in the store.

At the same time Sepha begins to fall for Judith and we see the impact that race and language has on their relationship. Once again, the hope of a bright future gives way to the dim reality of the struggle most first generation immigrants face.

Mengestu ultimately crafts a very satisfying and enjoyable read. It brings smiles and laughter to the reader as well sadness and disappointment -- working both at the character level but at the broader level of immigrant experience. Mengestu is a young author that you'll want to keep your eye out for in the future.

Beyond Enlightenment: Buddhism, Religion, Modernity (Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism), by Richard Cohen

The vast majority of books on Buddhism describe the Buddha using the word enlightened, rather than awakened. This bias has resulted in Buddhism becoming generally perceived as the eponymous religion of enlightenment.

Beyond Enlightenment is a sophisticated study of some of the underlying assumptions involved in the study of Buddhism (especially, but not exclusively, in the West). It investigates the tendency of most scholars to ground their study of Buddhism in these particular assumptions about the Buddha’s enlightenment and a particular understanding of religion, which is traced back through Western orientalists to the Enlightenment and the Protestant Reformation.

Placing a distinct emphasis on Indian Buddhism, Richard Cohen adeptly creates a work that will appeal to those with an interest in Buddhism and India and also scholars of religion and history.

Not worth the time
By A reader
This book has some interesting dimensions but seems to get a little lost in a tangle of overextended academic theories and a tendency to grossly overstate points.

The author makes the valid point that we must be careful about applying our concepts of what is "Buddhist" retroactively onto far removed times, places and people. But for all of his sensitivities to such things, he is strangely overdeterministic at times. For instance, he hypostatizes that because the Zen "rhetoric of immediacy" has been "enlisted in nativist, nationalist, militarist and sectarian purposes," anyone whose value system has been "informed" by Zen Buddhism is "an unwitting tool of medieval Japanese media-moguls just as certainly as the kid who thinks that he is merely obeying his thirst when he buys a Sprite." Uh, really? Does he not consider that some people simply happen to find a rhetoric of immediacy useful in their lives (and others happen to genuinely enjoy Sprite)?

This tendency to overstate points riddles the whole book. To give another example, he quarrels with the idea that the Ajanta caves should be construed as primarily Buddhist (or Bauddha, as he prefers) because Hindus utilized them for other purposed in the 19th century. Taking it a bit far, I would say.

Cohen says that he finds the Dalai Lama's assertion "there is every reason to appreciate and respect all forms of spiritual practice" to be "no less disturbing" than Tom Delay's statement to a group of Christian supremacists that "only Christianity offers a comprehensive worldview that covers all areas of life and though, every aspect of creation. Only Christianity offers a way to live in response to the realities that we find in this world--only Christianity." Really, he finds equivalence there? I understand his underlying point, but once again he way overstates it.

Cohen does do a good job comparing the claims of both Goenka and Richard Hayes to have distilled "what the Buddha really" taught, skewering their presumptions rather delightfully. But no sooner has Cohen finished this chapter than he obnoxiously proposes his own (rather incoherent) new and improved moral philosophy in the last chapter of the book. Thanks, but no thanks.

Coroner at Large, by Thomas Noguchi, Joseph DiMona

To Thomas Noguchi, America’s most famous medical examiner, every death is a mystery—until the cause is found

In his first book, the runaway bestseller Coroner, Dr. Noguchi wrote of his controversial investigations as medical examiner of Los Angeles County. In Coroner at Large, the man who has often been called the “Detective of Death” probes the mysteries surrounding the most celebrated criminal cases in recent American history.

Using sophisticated techniques of modern forensic science and once again “telling it like it is,” Dr. Noguchi reveals the truth behind the headlines in the untimely deaths of show business celebrities:

—The drowning of Beach Boy Dennis Wilson
—The murder of Sal Mineo
—The suicide of Freddie Prinze
—The slaying of “Playmate of the Year” Dorothy Stratten
—Elvis Presley’s fatal heart attack

Forensic science, too, provides new clues to fascinating historical puzzles: the true fates of General George Custer, the Emperor Napoleon, and Adolf Hitler.

In Coroner at Large, Dr. Noguchi brilliantly provides the missing links in our knowledge of these cases. Here, from his own investigations and his pioneering work in the field, we see forensic science in action, unraveling the mysteries of death—both natural and unnatural—in real-life cases that might have baffled even the great Sherlock Holmes.

Interesting theories of past unresolved deaths
By jmh
One must appreciate that Dr. Noguchi was at the forefront of forensic medicine around the time of this book, and in that respect he deserves accolades. In this, his second "coroner" book he assumes a consultant viewpoint of some famous and mysterious, unresolved deaths. Some of the more interesting ones are Elvis, the family members of Jeffrey McDonald, and even Jack the Ripper. It is interesting to see his viewpoints, although the novel at this point in time is becoming dated. Technology is rapidly evolving and resolving more and more questionable deaths. We have Mr. Noguchi to thank for promoting the field.

Coroner at Large
By Sylvia
The second part from Dr. Noguchi, with more tales of other celebrities' autopsies and stories behind them. There is always a story to be told about each and every one of us human beings and they do not stop with death. Again, Dr. Noguchi does not hold back his integrity and examines each patient with a very objective look. He does not judge and only relies on scientific results rather than having Hollywood or anyone else instruct him on what to say and not what to say.

Wished for just a bit more
By Terri Brunt
The information presented on many of the cases was just about what I had either remembered from the actual time of the event or reading about it. There was never a shocking tidbit released that I didn't already know. Still a good read, but I just needed that smoking gun.
