YA-- Higa tells of her experiences as a seven year old wandering for seven weeks in battle-torn Okinawa in 1945. Her nine-year-old brother was killed beside her as they slept. Separated from her sisters, she survived on her own and then with an elderly, handicapped couple. Although bloody corpses are a common sight, the book is not depressing. Aspects of Oriental culture and religion, such as the importance of family and the relationship of man to nature, can be seen. Sentences are usually short, but they don't detract from the effectiveness of this moving, autobiographical memoir. Recent immigrants from countries ravaged by war will find it particularly meaningful. All will be touched by Higa's tenacity under impossible circumstances and will be reminded that children continue to be the worst victims of war. --Claudia Moore, W. T. On Okinawa for the first time U.S. forces encountered a large civilian population. Estimates are that at least 75,000 Okinawan men, women, and children perished, many of them committing suicide rather than surrender. This book tells the story of the climax of this battle from the perspective of a seven-year-old girl, the author, who struggled against the odds to survive and to lead others to survival. Some rare photographs illuminate the ending to this simply told story, as the girl in the title comes into camera range of an American soldier. A charming story, a quick read for young and old alike.

I Enjoyed this book very much. Being of Okinawan ancestry, it was not until I visited Okinawa that I took an interest in the Battle of Okinawa. The ravages of war on a country and its people is so horrible....This was a brave little girl, who lived to tell her story. This is NOT a book for elementary school children.

I read this book because she shares my last name ...

but is no relation. And found I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There are many mentions in the customer reviews about it being middle school or young adolescent lit, so I was a little leery. And it is in a way, because the episodes in her life are just presented the way she remembered them. There is no tying it back to a larger political idea, no closure of narrative like one expect in an adult novel, and often "characters" in her story walk away never to be seen from or heard from again. So, in that way, if you are expecting an adult account with deep reflections, ramifications both political and social, and prescriptions and condemnations, then you need to read another book. But Higa's account was refreshing in that way that children are. She presents everything without guile or over-analysis. You feel the visceral experience with her as she climbs over the wasteland that her country becomes. She never sugar-coats anything because there is no need to when just presented factually. You feel her need, understand her young judgements, and are just charmed by her plucky character. In today's multicultural educational system, this book would be a good addition to any history of WWII.

About the Author
Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, known for such classics as The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and The Age of Innocence, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. A member of the New York elite, Wharton drew on her experiences as part of society to critique its inner workings and the conflict between personal desires and societal norms. Wharton died in 1937, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.

design reflection and illumination

Amidst today's seemingly endless supply of domestic guides and treatises on interior decoration, Edith Wharton might be surprised that her The Decoration of Houses (co-authored with architect Ogden Codman, Jr.) would still be as relevant and necessary as it is a century after its first publication. Long before "simplicity" and "classic" became catchwords for branding, Wharton took a public stand against the bland, trite excesses of Victorian d�cor in America. Favoring the considered, informed and complex processes of design rooted in architectural principles, her graceful humility was matched only by her assertive plea against the contemporary dominance of thoughtless, conspicuous consumption visible in New York society. As she determinately decreed: "According to the creed of the modern manufacturer, you have only to combine certain `good' to obtain a certain style."

Often associated with the frivolity connected to historical descriptions of femininity, this volume might be a surprise for those who prefer to view Wharton as a New York literary powerhouse. While her 40 books in 40 years (many of which were devoted to travels through European residences and gardens) are a testament to the force of her pen, it's the themes of beauty, pleasure, societal indulgence, cultural education and cosmopolitanism in America's modernity that make her analysis, and eventual ruling on the importance of design and space, a necessary extension of her literary thought. As she aptly begins her historical and aesthetic analysis, "Rooms may be decorated in two ways: by a superficial application of ornament totally dependent of structure, or by means of those architectural features which are part of the organism of every house, inside as well as out." And it's through these sixteen chapters that reflect on everything from the front door to the dining room to bric-a-brac that she offers readers a glimpse at the historic function of furnishings, as well as her claims about taste, beauty and the impact of residential design.

The Italian, French and British capacity for decorating in accord with the Grecian edict of "wise moderation," so admired by Wharton, is illustrated by black and white plates. The illustrations also reveal that the author's penchant for "classic" beauty wasn't about recreating kitschy historic facades or stoic sparseness. Rather, a considered pleasure seems to be her goal as she concludes, "There is no absolute perfection, there is no communicable ideal; but much that is empiric, much that is confused and extravagant, will give way before the application of principles based on common sense and regulated by the laws of harmony and proportion." True to her appreciation for sincerity in the application of decorative principles, readers can see the realization of her rules if they visit the Mount, a 113-acre Lenox estate designed by Wharton in 1902.

Recreated by Rizzoli using photographs of the original 1897 pressing, the only change made by the publishers in this edition is the use of the original interior dust jacket as the model for the printed design that now covers the book. But I don't think Wharton would mind, as she truly believed that design was about the external reflection and illumination of what's on the inside.

I was quite disappointed with the quality of this book. I was under the understanding that this book was still in publication. Thus I was expecting a newly printed book, same as the original, not the "photocopy" scan that arrived. Not at all pleased with it. The illustrations are horrible and some of the text is unreadable, very disappointing.

Nonsensical Printing

I am shocked upon receiving this book. Open it to any random page and you will find numerous typos and utter nonsensical letters -- please, do not think I am exaggerating. From the copy I received:

My goodness. Clearly the gentleman who made the positive review posted his review under the wrong edition. I do not understand who or what produced this nonsensical copy of The Decoration of Houses but I think Amazon should immediately remove it from sale.

About the Author
Benjamin Ginsberg is the David Bernstein Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Center for Advanced Governmental Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or coauthor of 25 books, including Presidential Power: Unchecked and Unbalanced; Downsizing Democracy: How America Sidelined Its Citizens and Privatized Its Public; Politics by Other Means; The Consequences of Consent; The Worth of War; and The Captive Public. Ginsberg received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1973. Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1992, Ginsberg was Professor of Government at Cornell. His most recent books are The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters; What the Government Thinks of the People; and Analytics, Policy and Governance.

Theodore J. Lowi has been John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University since 1972. He was elected President of the American Political Science Association in 1990 and was cited as the political scientist who made the most significant contribution to the field during the decade of the 1970s. Among his numerous books are The End of Liberalism and The Pursuit of Justice, on which he collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy.

Caroline Tolbert is Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa, where she regularly teaches the introductory American government course and was awarded the Collegiate Scholar Award for excellence in teaching and research. Her research explores political behavior, elections, American state politics, and the Internet and politics. Tolbert is coauthor of Digital Citizenship: The Internet Society and Participation; Why Iowa? How Caucuses and Sequential Elections Improve the Presidential Nominating Process; and Virtual Inequality: Beyond the Digital Divide. Digital Citizenship was ranked one of 20 best-selling titles in the social sciences by the American Library Association in 2007. Her latest coauthored scholarly book is Digital Cities: The Internet and the Geography of Opportunity. She is President of the State Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association.

Margaret Weir is Professor of Sociology and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She has written widely on social policy in Europe and the United States. She is the author of Politics and Jobs: The Boundaries of Employment Policy in the United States and coauthor (with Ira Katznelson) of Schooling for All: Class, Race, and the Decline of the Democratic Ideal. Weir has also edited (with Ann Shola Orloff and Theda Skocpol) The Politics of Social Policy in the United States.

About the Author
An Indiana native, Kevin worked for Procter & Gamble for 37 years. He was a Sales Representative, Unit Manager and District Manager before finally moving to Northwest Arkansas to become a Group Marketing Manager on P&G's Walmart Team. He spent his last 19 years managing three different category businesses at Walmart and in 2004 he became one of only four William Procter Sales Masters in North America.

Best book on sales ever, and a valuable mentorship that fits in your hand

This is the best book on sales I've ever had the pleasure to read, and I learned much from its insights. Canfield is not just another theorist; he was named a William Procter Sales Master - one of only FOUR in the world, and his decades of experience in the crucible of a very high stakes world comes through on every page. You can tell he's been through the battles and knows his stuff. There are few things in life more valuable than a good mentorship, and Mastering Sales is literally a mentorship that fits in your hand. The only way you could get the depth and level of information offered in this book would be to shadow Canfield or one of the other three Procter Sales Masters in person for a few years. And good luck doing that unless you want to move to Bentonville, Arkansas. Some of the information you find here can be put immediately to use (and I have). Other things are more general principles that will put you ahead of the competition if you study, apply and hold to them over time. I especially enjoyed the real-world examples from Canfield's own experience - it really put things nicely into context and made the theoretical concrete.

You could literally spend years trying learn the things you can pick up in Mastering Sales. Do yourself and favor and get ahead of the game now by picking this up. If you are in sales in any capacity, or even thinking about going into sales, I would not hesitate to buy this book. Trust me.

About the Author

Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist who works in many mediums and is�the recipient of numerous honors, including the Praemium Imperiale. Reflective honesty at its best

Japanese avant-garde artist, sculptor, and novelist Yayoi Kusama begins her memoir with the Yokohma 2001 International Triennale of Contemporary Art exhibition in which she showcased two installations. She then goes back in time to 1957 when she left Japan to further her career in art in America at the age of 27: ‘my destiny was decided’ in New York. After an initial struggle, she became a successful artist, noted for her ‘net’ art and later for her polka dots and ‘Kusama Happenings’ in the 1960s.

She painted the same thing every day: black canvases covered with nothing but nets, which looked like white lace. She describes her obsessive repetitive patterns and her ‘severe neurosis’ stemming from a ‘toxic childhood.’ She says that ‘before and after creating a work I fell ill, menaced by obsessions that crawl through my body.’ She suffered hallucinations, asthma, arrhythmia, tachycardia, and high and low blood pressure due to her severe anxieties. ‘If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago.’

Kusama’s autobiography describes her thoughts behind her artwork, how they developed, and why she focussed on specific themes. It provides readers with a full understanding behind her as an iconic figure and her iconic art. She is exceptionally honest and open about her mental anguish, but also about how she fully comprehends the triggers and how she deals with her demons – initially personally and later with the assistance of professional psychiatrists when she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital.

Writing her autobiography in 2001 at 72 years of age, she is now 87, living in the psychiatric hospital, and still painting.

This is a fascinating autobiography. This is more than a description of her artwork. It is an in-depth private view of her imagination and creativity, and the neuroses that drives her art as a way to exterminate her fears. ‘The positive and negative become one and consolidate my expression.’ She defines her work as Psychosomatic Art. Kusama finishes her autobiography in 2001 in a reflective, calm state of mind, content to continue her art – because she needs to, because she has to, because she wants to, and because it keeps her alive.

A waste of money

A waste of money. Her work is interesting but her autobiography is not. She basically just lists all of her achievements and toots her own horn. The book bored me and I quit reading it a quarter of the way through.

About the Author

Dr. Bijay (BJ) K. Sultanian is a recognized international authority in thermofluids and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). He is the founder and managing member of Takaniki Communications, LLC, and an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida, where he teaches graduate-level courses in turbomachinery and fluid mechanics. For nearly half of his 40+ year career, he worked at GE and Siemens. Sultanian received his BSME from IIT Kanpur and MSME from IIT Madras. He received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University, Tempe, and MBA from the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dull writing tinged with some good old-fashioned racism

Always looking for a good story of exploration, adventure, and derring-do, I decided to give Alan Moorehead's "The White Nile" a go. I slogged through the first several pages, hoping that the prose would pick up and capture me. Nope. So I gave it a few more pages, and it still didn't pick up. So I stopped and read a different book. A week later I came back to Moorehead and gave it another go, this time making it 50+ pages in. I still hate it.

I find Moorehead's writing both incredibly dull and incredibly racist. I could forgive both of these issues if I was reading a Victorian adventurer's firsthand account of searching for the source of the White Nile. But for a mid-20th century (although, by date of his birth, perhaps too firmly rooted in Edwardian times), it is incredibly grating and distracting. Please note that I'm not exclaiming that Moorehead is (was) a racist and therefore his work does not deserve to be read. Instead I'm saying that I find his writing lifeless, with his penchant for leaning on silly and racist stereotypes of the peoples his subjects encountered making his prose all the more dull.

I may give this book another go at some point in the future, but I doubt I'll find it any less boring.

Two years after the success of "The White Nile" (1960), Moorehead spinned further yarns of African adventurers and Nilotic history. This time the year span is from 1798 to 1858 and the location is on the Blue Nile, dealing with Sudan and Ethiopia. European exploration of this lesser but not least branch of the mighty river started further back in time because of its easier accessibility from the Red Sea coast. After a brief description of the ancient history and geography of the river, we meet Bruce, a Scottish explorer who despite his meticulous research and extraordinary scripts passed at his return home as a megalomaniac. Successive events find Napoleon's invasion accompanied by the savants and the destruction of the Mameluk rule that really represented the turning point of the modern history of the valley of the Nile. After Napoleon's departure the Turk Muhammad Ali regained power destroying a greater part of the Sudanese population. The last part of the book deals with King Theodore of Ethiopia, a mad chieftain that captured and held in ransom over 400 people for four years, and that was overcome by the British army.
This book can be read alone or better as a sequel of "The White Nile". The narration is equally effective and the limits are those of a book written in the 1960's. The episodes are less dealing with only four major topics. I read the book in a day and half, considering it took me three days to read the "The White Nile". Now I have to look for further stories by this great writer.

"The sunburst of Victorian courage and imagination"

An excerpta from the book's epilogue seemed to make the most appropriate title for what I found one of the most engrossing reads of the last months. It took me only three days to gallop through this epical work that is dated exactly 1960. Yes, a book that has been in print for almost 50 years and still reads like it was published yesterday! Alan Moorehead (1910-1983) was a famous Australian journalist and prolific writer, that enjoyed great success during his lifetime and whose work covered many subjects, mostly dealing with exploration, history, military campaigns.
"The White Nile" is the condensed but detailed history of the mostly British exploration of the sources of the Nile, that interested European society as a geographic/expansionistic/colonial curiosity and a metaphysical necessity in the second part of the Nineteenth Century. Starting from Burton and Speke's journey (see if you can "The Mountains of the Moon"), followed by Speke's and Grant's adventure and Baker of the Nile (read Pat Shipman's "To the Heart of the Nile") long permanence in the region of the great African lakes we are introduced into the mystery, magic and misery of the then unknown region Central Africa. Follow Livingstone and Stanley's adventures, whose minute explanation clarifies some often erroneous opinions on these incredible characters. Through the analysis of Egyptian relationship with colonial powers (the opening of the Suez canal) and the Sudanese people and the economical reasons (slavery and ivory trade) for warfare we are introduced to Gordon and his "skakespearian" (the Author's attribute) fate. The German born Emin Pasha's surrealistic life and rule of Equatoria concludes the great adventurous epoch, before the opening up of the river by the English defeat of the Islamic revolt in Sudan.
This book has been criticized for its "whiteman's" historical view and has also been defined as racist. Naturally it is dated and today we have a much more open global perspective. History consequently is rewritten every few decades. However, balancing the pro's and con's, I believe this book is a milestone for a first approach to the fascinating history of the exploration of the Nile and of Central Africa. Many of the modern issues of Sudan and Uganda were born in the moment these countries were opened up by European powers, and Moorehead's work definitely is useful to understand what is going on today.
If it were possible to make a comparison between Moorehead and more modern writer, I would choose Peter Hopkirk, whose history writing is similarly anglocentric and adventuresome.
I strongly recommend this book for its content but also for its form that turns non fiction into a great roller coaster ride into history. The best way to learn!
