About the Author

James Whittaker has spent his career in software testing and has left his mark on many aspects of the discipline. He was a pioneer in the field of model-based testing, where his Ph.D. dissertation from the University of Tennessee stands as a standard reference on the subject. His work in fault injection produced the highly acclaimed runtime fault injection tool Holodeck, and he was an early thought leader in security and penetration testing. He is also well regarded as a teacher and presenter, and has won numerous best paper and best presentation awards at international conferences. While a professor at Florida Tech, his teaching of software testing attracted dozens of sponsors from both industry and world governments, and his students were highly sought after for their depth of technical knowledge in testing.

Dr. Whittaker is the author of How to Break Software and its series follow- ups How to Break Software Security (with Hugh Thompson) and How to Break Web Software (with Mike Andrews). After ten years as a professor, he joined Microsoft in 2006 and left in 2009 to join Google as the Director of Test Engineering for the Kirkland and Seattle offices. Anyone who has ever used a computer understands that software fails. From the very first program to the most recent modern application, software has never been perfect.

Nor is it ever likely to be. Not only is software development insanely complex and the humans who perform it characteristically error prone, the constant flux in hardware, operating systems, runtime environments, drivers, platforms, databases, and so forth converges to make the task of software development one of humankind’s most amazing accomplishments.

But amazing isn’t enough, as Chapter 1, “The Case for Software Quality,” points out, the world needs it to be high quality, too.

Clearly, quality is not an exclusive concern of software testers. Software needs to be built the right way, with reliability, security, performance, and so forth part of the design of the system rather than a late-cycle afterthought. However, testers are on the front lines when it comes to understanding the nature of software bugs. There is little hope of a broad-based solution to software quality without testers being at the forefront of the insights, techniques, and mitigations that will make such a possibility into a reality.

There are many ways to talk about software quality and many interested audiences. This book is written for software testers and is about a specific class of bugs that I believe are more important than any other: bugs that evade all means of detection and end up in a released product.

Any company that produces software ships bugs. Why did those bugs get written? Why weren’t they found in code reviews, unit testing, static analysis, or other developer-oriented activity? Why didn’t the test automation find them? What was it about those bugs that allowed them to avoid manual testing?

What is the best way to find bugs that ship?

It is this last question that this book addresses. In Chapter 2, “The Case for Manual Testing,” I make the point that because users find these bugs while using the software, testing must also use the software to find them. For automation, unit testing, and so forth, these bugs are simply inaccessible. Automate all you want, these bugs will defy you and resurface to plague your users.

The problem is that much of the modern practice of manual testing is aimless, ad hoc, and repetitive. Downright boring, some might add. This book seeks to add guidance, technique, and organization to the process of manual testing.

In Chapter 3, “Exploratory Testing in the Small,” guidance is given to testers for the small, tactical decisions they must make with nearly every test case. They must decide which input values to apply to a specific input field or which data to provide in a file that an application consumes. Many such small decisions must be made while testing, and without guidance such decisions often go unanalyzed and are suboptimal. Is the integer 4 better than the integer 400 when you have to enter a number into a text box? Do I apply a string of length 32 or 256? There are indeed reasons to select one over the other, depending on the context of the software that will process that input. Given that testers make hundreds of such small decisions every day, good guidance is crucial.

In Chapter 4, “Exploratory Testing in the Large,” guidance is given for broader, strategic concerns of test plan development and test design. These techniques are based on a concept of tours, generalized testing advice that guides testers through the paths of an application like a tour guide leads a tourist through the landmarks of a big city. Exploration does not have to be random or ad hoc, and this book documents what many Microsoft and Google testers now use on a daily basis. Tours such as the landmark tour and the intellectual’s tour are part of the standard vocabulary of our manual testers. Certainly, test techniques have been called “tours” before, but the treatment of the entire tourist metaphor for software testing and the large-scale application of the metaphor to test real shipping applications makes its first appearance in this book.

Testing in the large also means guidance to create entire test strategies. For example, how do we create a set of test cases that give good feature coverage? How do we decide whether to include multiple feature usage in a single test case? How do we create an entire suite of test cases that makes the software work as hard as possible and thus find as many important bugs as possible? These are overarching issues of test case design and test suite quality that have to be addressed.

In Chapter 5, “Hybrid Exploratory Testing Techniques,” the concept of tours is taken a step further by combining exploratory testing with traditional script or scenario-based testing. We discuss ways to modified end-to-end scenarios, test scripts, or user stories to inject variation and increase the bug-finding potential of traditionally static testing techniques.

In Chapter 6, “Exploratory Testing in Practice,” five guest writers from various product groups at Microsoft provide their experience reports from the touring techniques. These authors and their teams applied the tours to real software in real shipping situations and document how they used the tours, modified the tours, and even created their own. This is the first-hand account of real testers who ship important, mission-critical software.

Finally, I end the book with two chapters aimed at wrapping up the information from earlier chapters. In Chapter 7, “Touring and Testing’s Primary Pain Points,” I describe what I see as the hardest problems in testing and how purposeful exploratory testing fits into the broader solutions. In Chapter 8, “The Future of Software Testing,” I look further ahead and talk about how technologies such as virtualization, visualization, and even video games will change the face of testing over the next few years. The appendixes include my take on having a successful testing career and assemble some of my more popular past writings (with new annotations added), some of which are no longer available in any other form.

some useful ideas, but lots of fluff, and bad editing

I've read about 70% of the book and I think its usefulness is winding down for me. I disagree with the reviewer that said everything here is for entry level QA staff. I've been doing software engineering (development and test engineering) for about 24 years now (about 7 years of that as an agile tester) and a lot of this book is new to me. The real value here for me is the material on the tourist metaphor of testing, or what Whittaker and others call "touring tests" (pun intended). These are essentially "styles" of tests that any experienced test engineer has used in the past. But what's new is the focus on testing a product through these tours.

Most software organizations split up testing responsibilities in a way where one test engineer is assigned a feature, and then he tests that feature from a lot of different angles - acceptance tests, error tests, stress tests, etc. Whittaker's approach, as espoused in this book, is to turn things 90 degrees around. Instead of the classic way, give a test engineer one angle and then have him test all features from that angle. This exercises connections between features, which is where more bugs (supposedly) live.

That's the thesis, and most of rest of the good part of the book is material to help explain that and flesh it out. Unfortunately, there's also a lot of material that's just filler, like poorly-written blog articles from Whittaker's coworkers. A lot of the rest of it sounds like his own blog posts, too, and one whole appendix is literally that! As an aside, I've gotta say that's a great job if you can get it - reuse material you wrote at your day job, and get paid a second time to publish it in a book. Awesome!

Unfortunately, for such a detail-oriented guy in a detail-oriented field like software testing, there are a lot of mistakes in Whittaker's text. The editor, assuming they actually paid one, did a distractingly poor job, at least on the Kindle version of the book. And the sections written by Whittaker's non-writer coworkers read just like emails - typos, grammar errors, inconsistencies, and all (the guy who uses backslashes when he means forward slashes is adorable when you consider he's paid by Microsoft). The writing feels very authentic for a blog, but not up to professional-grade standards for a book.

Inside this tiny book is a focused 60-page monograph struggling to meet an editor who can dig it out and reveal its genius to the world. There's some good stuff in here, but you'll have to work for it.

EDIT: Apparently I put this review on the paperback version of the book. I actually read the Kindle version of the book. I assume the text is the same, and since I didn't comment on the binding or page material, this review should be just as relevant.

Stick to the subject

This book spent so much time on subjects other than exploratory testing. The future of software testing? That's the subject for a different book. Some of the "user stories" were very poorly written. I noted a handful of typos (a QA book really shouldn't have any). I like the metaphors presented, but the takeaways could have been just as affectively written in 40 pages. It was a chore to get through this book. I'd recommend skipping it and instead searching for the touring metaphor and examples.

In the last two decades cultural theorists and artists have redefined a genre of artistic expression that for centuries was regarded as both elusive and notorious: the pastiche, or pasticcio. Today, highly engaging manifestations of the genre minor can be found in architecture, painting, and mixed media installations; in film, literature, and performance modes ranging from the operatic to rock event; and in supposedly trivial discourses such as advertising.

Postmodern pastiche is about cultural memory as a history of seeing and writing. One of the markers that sets aesthetic postmodernism apart from modernism is artistic practice that borrows ostentatiously from the archive of Western culture, which modernism, in its search for the unperformed, tended to dismiss. Contemporary artists are re-examining traditions that modernism eclipsed in its pursuit of the "Shock of the New" or―in the case of architects―the functionalism of the International style.

Easy to find things

Very convenient to use the e-book. The last time I used an e-book for school it was so-so. But now you can copy and paste for note taking, also highlight. Easy to find things. Really happy with the way that Amazon/Kindle has responded to feedback. The book itself, fine. A bit cluttered, but the chapters are small and focused. There was an effort to keep the material interesting.

This book, Scientific American Environment Science for a Changing World, has been one of the most informative, enlightening, eye opening, mouth dropping, reading experiences in my life. This is not an exaggeration by any means. So much has been done to 'our' planet with unintentional, yet disregarded results. Many of the inhabitants who live here on Earth suffer dearly while others go about their happy go lucky lifestyles without a clue as to what is really going on across a sea, river, ocean and/or continent. It has opened my eyes and put tears in them. This book should be a required reading for all students and all people. Thank you.

Gorgeous YA novel that explores how precious life and love truly are

This is one of the most beautifully written YA novels I've ever read. Madeline is not like other teenagers: she hasn't left her house since she was a baby, due to a rare allergy that's compromised her immune system, and stays within its white walls with only her mother (her father and brother died before she can remember), plus her nurse, Carla, to care for her. Instead, she escapes into the fantasy of books, living vicariously through them. She's happy with that arrangement, until a boy named Olly moves next door. She tries to ignore him at first, but curiosity gets the better of her and they begin their own form of friendship.

Yoon weaves in prose along with artwork, drawn by her husband, and IM messages, official documents and Madeline's quirky ultra-short book reviews as a way of taking us inside her world. It's a rich one, despite the fact that she hasn't "lived" in the way most of us would truly think of living. She's wise for her age when it comes to book knowledge, but incredibly sheltered in almost every other way. Madeline's upbringing could have made her not just quirky but forlorn, depressed or bitter, but she's not. She's gotten used to her world, but when it starts to open up as her relationship with Olly develops, she starts to see it with new eyes.

It's Madeline's transformation from accepting to curious, when she begins to envision something new for herself, to let herself admit to loving Olly, that this book really takes off. Madeline ruminates about love in ways I don't think any of us, no matter what our age, truly can master, because there are no guarantees and no way to know if you've done the right thing. Madeline has to balance what she's willing to risk for love and self-knowledge, and she risks quite a lot here, including her life. I was like the baby who's going viral because he cries when a book ends. I didn't want to part with Madeline, but I'm so glad I have her voice in my head. She is not so sage or wise beyond her years that she knows everything, but rather is brave enough to keep searching and exploring and learning about herself and the people around her. Highly recommended.

Originally, I saw friends reading this and they loved it. I immediately put my request in for it at the library. The ebooks always take time, so by the time I was notified that a copy was available I had forgotten about this book. This turned out to be a great YA read. It had me sucked in right from the start.

"I've read many more books than you. It doesn't matter how many you've read. I've read more. Believe me. I've had the time.

Seventeen year old Madeline lives with her mother and hangs out with her nurse/friend Carla throughout the day. See she can't leave her home because she's been diagnosed to have a rare disease that leaves her basically allergic to the world. It's called SCID. Each time her mother or nurse come and go into the house they have to go through a decontamination process to make sure they don't bring anything into the sterile environment that Madeline needs to live.

Never leaving your house makes for a lot of free time of which Madeline reads, watches movies or plays games with her mother. One of the things that I loved was how she writes her name in her books and rewards to who ever will return it if it's ever lost. She was so creative and funny.

This was her normal life. She was content with it. Until one day, when she hears the familiar sound of a moving truck at the house next door. She watches from her window while the family moves in. That's when she sees him, Olly and he sees her. Later, Olly and his sister Kara bring over a bundt cake their mother made wanting to meet Madeline. Unfortunately, her mother has to refuse the food and can't let them in because of Madeline's disease. The things Olly did with that bundt cake latter had me cracking up.

Soon though, Olly and Madeline begin chatting through emails or IMs. It takes Madeline some time, but eventually she opens up about her disease and why she can't go outside. Olly was awesome about it. He didn't stop talking to her or run away and their friendship grew stronger.

With Carla's help they do sneak some visits and let Olly come over to meet Madeline. The rules are to never touch, just talk. And they follow those rules...in the beginning. But later they test their boundaries by holding hands and then a kiss. Soon Madeline is willing to risk it all for him.

"I was happy before I met him. But I'm alive now, and those are not the same thing."

Gah! I loved this book! More than I thought I would. I even dreamed about it. Maybe it's because I had a connection with the Hawaii part. I had been to the exact places that were discussed in this book. The attached picture is one I took of Black Rock. Whatever the case may be, this book made me stop and realize that life is short and precious. We take so many things in life for granted and it's nice to have a reminder every now and then.

"Everything's a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It's up to you."

This was my first read by Nicola Yoon. I loved her husband's drawings that were added. The writing was perfect, captivating and really made me feel. I also liked the plot twist added towards the end. I wasn't expecting it. I was actually expecting a different ending, but the twist, while while sad made for a better ending to me. If you like YA then I would definitely recommend this one.

Fast and Easy Read

This is my first real review so I am nervous on how I am structuring this review. Please let me know if there is anything that I need to change in order for you to develop more information you need before buying a book.

I love the book. It is a very quick read. I finished it in two sittings, only because I had to something else that did not involve reading. Nicola’s writing is really easy to understand. The only complicated words would be the medical terms. The fonts itself is big enough and not too dense, for example, like Games of Thrones. There are no chapters, such as Chapter One, Chapter Two… but rather titles such as Wonderland, Time, and Mirror, Mirror. The chapters/titles is not even that long. Some of them are just a page. The book have artwork inside (her husband, David did them!).

Finally, I am going to talk about the book itself. Two teenagers, who had very different childhoods. One of them, named Madeline, who has severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), also known as “bubble baby disease that had her to be allergic to the world, basically. She never had smelt fresh air since her house has filters to clean the air. She would spent time working on her schoolwork via the computer. Read books. The only touches she would get is from her own mother, Pauline and her nurse, Carla. It wasn’t till Oliver, or Olly, has moved next door when things started to fall apart, not just for Madeline but for everyone that knows Madeline. I wanted to say more but I don’t want to spoil things!

I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because the ending felt wrong with me. It felt like it finished quite quickly. I wish there is more pages in the ending. It is missing something and I cannot touch on what it is.

This will be made into a movie!

The cover! Do not get me start on the cover. The cover gave you tiny hints on what the book itself is all about without actually giving it away.

Poorly Written

This book is so poorly written including typos and poor English that it is very hard to read. I chose this book to purchase because it is more recently written than the others. There may be very good information in the book, but because of the poor writing I am finding it very hard to get through. Do not waste your money on this item. There is a reason that it is only $4.99.

buyer beware

This book has poor grammar, and lots of misspellings. It's apparent no one proofed this book before publishing. Not nearly as informative as I had expected. I have common sense and all this book informed me of was my own common sense. I expected the book to teach me how to train my giant schnauzer puppy without having to go to obedience classes but instead every other paragraph in this book tells me to do just that, GO TO OBEDIENCE CLASS...very disappointing. Not to mention the lack of knowledge I felt I received from this book. It literally repeats itself word for word thru out the book. Same paragraphs are used in multiple chapters. This is not a step to step book on how to train a giant schnauzer by any means. Buyer beware...

"Mean join Fraternities..." -John Wayne

Awesome book, tells the best story based on what every rushee, pledge, and brother goes through during the best 4 years of his life. Hilarious stories that I will read again and again. Something I will give my future son once he joins a fraternity. BUY even if you aren't in a fraternity (which you should be)

Love this book! It is a good read and interesting to see hazing through a person who has been hazed eyes. This book does not make me proud to be a member of a greek organization, but empowers me to change the way that greek life is seen.

Captures the Moment Well

"Total Frat Move" is a great novel that very accurately captures the feel of what is is like being in a fraternity. The way the characters speak to each other, their interactions with each other, they way the dress and act, and the outrageous events of the book closely mirror the memories I have had in my fraternity. Excessive use of the F-word, the bestowing of nicknames, and generally verbal berating of brothers and random people may be unnerving to outsiders, but the daily interactions I have with my brothers all are similar to how they are described in this book. The Game Day morning drinking schedule/walk-of-shame on the front porch of the Alpha house resonated particularly well, as on one memorable morning at my chapter, a few dozen or so brothers created a human tunnel for one night stands to run through as they left the house. My experiences too have seen police cars, firetrucks, and ambulances flashing their lights in front of our house, and some of my brothers and I have had the sobering pleasure of picking up pledge brothers from jail or the hospital, only to crack jokes about the unfortunate victims (to their faces) just hours later.

Modern views of fraternity life (like the show Greek or American Pie movies) seem to glaze over some important experiences such as pledgeship and simply living in a house. Total Frat Move does justice to these fraternal fundamentals, truly describing how lowly the pledges are, the great ordeal that pledgeship is, the euphoric elation of finally being initiated, and the spontaneous shenanigans that precipitate from putting 50+ 18-22 year old guys under the same roof. Though I have many great memories of my first semester being exposed to Greek Life, I often describe pledgeship as "The greatest time of your life that you will never want to do again". Total Frat Move may be the first entertainment medium that is ballsy enough to call pledgeship as it really is: difficult. It may also be one of the first entertainment media to describe life in a fraternity house outside of sex and partying. "The Frat Castle" chapter of the book nails it, wonderfully illustrating the made-up games live-ins invent, the ever-present spirit of friendly competition between members and not-so-friendly rivalry between neighbor houses, and the porch fratting that occurs in the months of the school year when the temperature is high and course loads are low.

I do wish some other experiences were able to make it into the book, such as Sorority Serenades and Fraternity Intramural Athletics. There have been some truly legendary serenades on my campus, with the sorority "babies" offering pants-tightening performances and free lap dances, and more than a couple interhouse feuds started after particularly competitive intramural games. The author could have also talked a little more about how fraternity brothers -- and especially pledge brothers -- are the greatest friends you will ever have in your life, how these are the guys that will be in your wedding, go on post-grad trips with, and bury you at your funeral. Maybe the author is too young to have experienced this or this is too serious of a tone for such a lighthearted book, but in my experiences, I am already in my pledge brother's wedding, and I have spent my who life observing my dad's relationship with his fraternity brothers -- he is still incredibly close to his brothers even 35 years after he graduated.

"Total Frat Move" is not a perfect book. It won't win literary awards or be taught in high schools across the country as an example of flawless American literature. The characters aren't particularly compelling, nor is the story arch or character development remarkable. But what "Total Frat Move" does do is take true chronicles of fraternity men across the country, novelize these experiences, and immortalize the greatest years of our lives in written, published form. I can relate almost every single one of the characters mentioned with one of my brothers, and I have had similar experiences to those detailed in the book. "Total Frat Move" gives us an unfiltered view of Greek Life as it exists now, in the early part of the 21st century, and does so in a pretty entertaining way. It is a pure example of art imitating life. The book reflects reality, for better or for worse -- and having lived through it, I say it's for better.
