Brzezinski's irreverent, swashbuckling account captures the greed and desperation of the time. He bribes his way aboard a Russian submarine. He survives a freak radiation spike at Chernobyl and travels 400 miles on a private plane for lunch with a gorgeous robber baroness. He's set upon by Ukrainian thugs, who leave him tied with electrical cord in a bathtub. Fortified with vodka, he crashes ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky's birthday party. And he visits a camp of "Young Pioneers", in which children play an elaborate game to learn the principles of a free market - with disastrous results that foretell the chaos in store for the Russian economy.

Been there, done that, now back again

Casino Moscow, about post-Soviet Russian and Eastern Europe, is a surprising page turner. Having worked in Russia and other former Soviet Republics, I was walking back in time as I read the book. Brzezinki's accurate portrayal of the life an expat (from the initial shock upon arrival, to the slow immersion to local custom, all the way to going native) and the business customs and irregularities (finding business partners, traveling on local transport, needless and antiquated bureaucracy, the mafia and all of the ironies in between). I laughed at loud at times and other times was reminded how scary a place to live it was. I think the comparisons to Liar's Poker are apt. The story is griping, funny, and for many people I know, all too close to reality. Billions of dollars at play in an unregulated wild west arena. He has the oil fields, oil men, bankers, Chechens, Tartars, Radisson, Nightflight, dinner parties, expat haunts, trips to the provinces,....all of it down pat and eerily reminiscent of what I know to be true. Casino Moscow culminates with an interesting and credible (hailing from the WSJ) perspective on the final spurts of Russian economic "growth."

Excellent Illustration of the "New Wild West"

I read this book cover-to-cover this past weekend and found that it captures the spirit and feelings I experienced while working and living in Russia myself in 1994-1996 as a highly paid and pampered business consultant. To this day, I still cannot accurately explain the living and working conditions as an expat in Russia/East Europe during those crazy years. I generally resort to pulling out the more than 300 hours of videotape and some 4000 pictures I took while there in order to remind myself what I went through. I do recall both cursing and thanking my circumstances on a daily basis -- cursing the long winter days, the inability to accomplish simple business tasks; thanking the opportunity I had to help transform the former "Evil Empire" into a potential commercial, financial, military and social ally of the West (Needless to say, those expats on the ground during those years had some lofty aspirations.)
I have been back to Moscow (as recently as this recent August) many times since my long-term stay and continually ask myself how the changes put into play in the early/mid-1990s resulted in the current state of the country and people.
For all of those who want to know what it was like during those wild and insane mid-1990s as an expat in Russia, this book is for you. There is no need for endless hours of videotape and pictures to see -- this book captures a big chunk of history in a neat and concise bundle.

The wild wild east

This book is an entertaining and valuable read for anyone interested in the countries and people emerging from the collapse of the Soviet empire. The book covers far more than just Moscow but ranges into the Ukraine, Belarus, Siberia and Poland. The author has a good eye for physical and personal detail and sets scenes well. He is also able to draw the reader into an understanding of the larger implications of the events he witnessed. Brzezinski also has the advantage of growing up in French Canada as the son of Polish immigrant parents. The resulting linguistic and ethnic understanding has given him a feeling of closeness to the Slavic people of whom he writes. He is able to write in a fluid style for an American audience but at the same time he reveals a sense of irony toward the wonders of the capitalistic system that many Americans, no matter how well traveled, lack.

Slow Start

I was intrigued by the title and concept but took a very long time to read this book.

The story took a very long time to develop, thus I had a hard time getting in to it. By the midpoint, it was fun to watch Lanigan's plan unfold. I guess four years in hiding allows one to think of everything.

The deals did have me thinking it was all too easy, and that's pretty much how things turned out.

Not one of my favorite Grisham novels. Didn't really pick up any emotional attachment to any of the characters and left with little to think about after the last page.

The Partner by John Grisham is entertaining, but unbelievable. It talks of a law partner who stole 90 million dollars from his law firm & it's client, feigns his death & runs away from a law firm that was about to boot him, from a miserable marriage, & from a bastard child. He ultimately got caught, but he had all the answers or strategies to overcome all the charges against him - theft, murder, divorce, etc. What a genius he is for plotting, planning & gathering all evidence against those who filed cases against him, even before the cases were filed against him. That is how the novel becomes unbelievable. It also had a lousy ending by the disappearance of the woman he loved & losing all the money he stole or made. He escapes all those pursuing him, but in the end he lost the girl who knew where his money was, who he believed loved him & did his bidding. Well, he couldn't have all the luck in the world. His good luck finally ran out. Merece!

Grisham's best work in years

I liked this one because it wasn't the standard Grisham legal fare in a different wrapper. The last few Grisham books, in my opinion, For those of you, like me, who thinks Grisham's books were getting a little stale with the same basic theme, "Small firm or entry-level big firm lawyer risks life and limb defending the little guy and taking on giant multi-national corporation, etc etc...," this novel might be worth your time.

Our main character in The Partner is, in true Grisham fashion, a young attorney slaving away trying to climb the ladder in his firm when a terrible and fiery car crash claims his life. Where this story varies from the typical Grisham is that the lead character is essentially a criminal himself, albeit one who designs an elaborate plan of stealing from high ranking, corrupt officials by out scheming the schemers - the story, for the most part, is not centered around legal maneuverings as much as it is about a lonely guy whose life lacks meaning trying to change things for the better. A failing marriage, a career he doesn't enjoy, corrupt bosses, financial hurdles. He finds meaning in an unconventional way and the story unfolds with "only in a Grisham" suspense and detail. Throw in a devoted love interest, unforeseen plot twists, and a dazzling ending, and you have the best Grisham effort in several years.

In fact, Gordon (The Scarlet Woman of Wall Street) notes the many stumbles and the frequent foolishness and corruption that attended the nation's rise as an economic powerhouse. The larger story of success is, in fact, an extraordinary one. The trouble is that the American economy, like every other, bends much out of shape. It has always provided opportunity but always with too much inequality. A full history of the American economy would take this into consideration—in the past as well as the present, and Gordon's doesn't. Also, his book sometimes wanders off into irrelevant subjects, like the origins of the computer, but his grasp of the larger picture is sure and his prose bright. His chapter on Northern and Southern Civil War finances is a model of its kind. Those seeking an introduction to the general history of American economic power will find few better places to start, as long as they keep in mind that the nation's economy is not perfect, its benefits not unalloyed and its future domination of other economic powerhouses by no means assured.

Economic history for the rest of us

There are some thick and thorough volumes covering U.S. economic history written by academics and used as textbooks in college courses. They are fine if you have the time and motivation to push through them.

This isn't one of those.

Mr. Gordon's book is more journalistic than academic, although his research is thorough. He is a native New Yorker both of whose grandfathers owned seats on the New York Stock Exchange, so his grasp of banking and finance is almost genetic. He explains these arcane matters about as clearly as anyone could.

One of his over-arching themes is that America made bad calls when we shut down both the First Bank of the United States (Alexander Hamilton's creation) and the subsequent Second Bank of the United States. There were passionate fights over these institutions involving some of our most famous statesmen and it makes a compelling story. Mr. Gordon argues pretty convincingly that a well-governed central bank could have buffered a lot of the economic misery of the volatile 19th century.

And this isn't just history. The same political controversies continue in our own time over the proper role of the Federal Reserve System, and it's uncanny how closely they follow the old fights between Hamilton and Jefferson more than 200 years ago.

There are plenty of statistics -- they're inescapable in this context -- but he ladles them out as inoffensively as anyone could. And the stats are more than balanced with a host of colorful characters, both heroes and villains. Some are well-known, some obscure, but their stories are all well-told.

Mr. Gordon tends to be sympathetic to the financiers and entrepreneurs he portrays, but he is not uncritical of them. There are plenty of scoundrels and swindlers among them, too, and he doesn't hesitate to call them out.

American no longer remember the capitalism and effort and sacfices that made us a great nation- most clever was the comparison of the US to Argentina- why did we become the super power? Why did they struggle still ? Rule of law, fair good government and freedom to take advantage of a fast changing economic landscape- I think every American should read it- we might be in a better place

A solid foundation to understanding American economic history

If you're looking for a book on the history of American economics, then look no further. John Steele Gordon takes two subjects that don't exactly arouse the most excitement in people--economics and history--and creates an informative, page-turning collaboration on United States economic history dating back to colonial times. Mr. Gordon gives us an insightful look into the economics of the colonial era, how the nation's fiscal structure was established following the Revolutionary War, the effects of the American Civil War on the Union and Confederacy's economic well-being, and concludes with more recent economic issues such as the Great Depression, the World Wars, and the effects of newer inventions such as the Internet on the American economy.

Of course, a book summarizing the entirety of American economic history is bound to read like a college textbook at times. The abundance of information in this book makes it hard to absorb much information in one sitting. However, this is probably inevitable due to the nature of the topic. Taking the subject that Mr. Gordon had to work with into consideration, I'd have to admit that he did a remarkable job in making "An Empire of Wealth" an enjoyable read for the average reader who may not be well-versed in history or economics.

If you are interested in the rise of American economic power, this is a must-read. Mr. Gordon's book is guaranteed to give you a solid foundation of understanding about the history of the United States, and may leave you with much appreciation for some of the great players in history who helped build this country to what it is today.

Be Informed about World Events

This book provides an excellent introduction to International Relations through an examination of concise essays concerning such areas as Terrorism, the Cold War, Human Rights and Globalisation among others. For a better understanding of the complexities of world events and to be well informed about historical concepts, this book is an excellent read. The subjects are placed in the broad sweep of history, pointing to relationships that will encourage discursive reading. International Relations - The Key Concepts, will remain the pre-eminent reference work, that in my view will be unsurpassed.

Excellent!

I was fortunate enough to have a class taught by Dr. Roach, and I have to say that this book is superb. Each concept has an essay that concisely explains the topic. It's very clear and very helpful in understanding anything concerning international relations, especially the international political economy. I'm keeping it after the class because it's so useful.
